The government was raked over the coals yesterday by members of the Progressive Liberal Party who alleged that a number of public servants fired since the May 2 General Election have been victimized. The PLP said that it may take legal action against the government to challenge the recent dismissals in court.
One Opposition MP went as far to refer to the government as a group of "mean-spirited" individuals who were attempting to balance the country's budget "on the backs of poor people."
The back and forth wrangling between the Government and the Opposition over reports of victimization and lay-offs in the public service intensified yesterday.
Flanked by his parliamentary colleagues, including a noticeably silent Opposition Leader Perry Christie, Bain and Grant's Town MP Dr. Bernard Nottage said employees of the public service and public corporations had been living in "fear" for the past four months. He alleged that the
government had implemented a policy of "hunt and fire" without "due consideration, compassion or concern."

Like Zhivargo Laing said, if all these temporary workers were only PLP's how come only PLP's got hired? Because if some were FNM's that were fired, then you cannot call it victimization.
Ain't that a form of victimization! Only giving your supporters job. The PLP needs to look at the whole picture before they only look at it from their angle.
Alien 09-06-07, - 12:51 PM Like Zhivargo Laing said, if all these temporary workers were only PLP's how come only PLP's got hired?
Cuz it wasnt just PLPs that got hired. It was a host of Bahamians, people who voted for them to be provided with permanent employment. Some of these people, who have been on the job as a temp for a year even, STILL voted for the FNM and now they are not even sure about their job as it is now.
So, it was not just PLPs who got the bad end of the stick as it was Bahamians. As the PLP kept in "Bahamians" when they came in office. But I think, the first set of persons to feel the pain were the blatant PLPs, as someone is someone in this town and politics is easy to spot. This is where the PLP victimization thing came up. In fact, when the PLP was in power, as should be the case of the FNM, they worked for all Bahamians. So, in essence, they were PLP supporters as they came for help, at a time when they needed it.
With that, you can't take Laing's word about what the PLP said; quite obviously.
Because if some were FNM's that were fired, then you cannot call it victimization.
Yes we can say that. Bahamians were victimized; at least, they got hit hard at a time where getting hit hard was not warranted. Makes it worse to me, as they all were victimized. FNMs, PLPs and whoever thought this government, would do the honourable thing and help Bahamians to get a chance to get ahead!
Ain't that a form of victimization! Only giving your supporters job. The PLP needs to look at the whole picture before they only look at it from their angle.
I think the only people saying, that only PLPs were hired and fired are FNMs. To totally honest, the people I worked with, in fact, the lady who I was in charge of was a hard-core FNM. In fact, her father ran for the FNM. No one is more FNM than her, but, she was on basic temp government job as she was one of those unlucky few, who got a bad deal with the financial crisis and was on the bread line; huttin, out of work and children to feed.
I think we need to take the politics out of this, as Bahamains accross the board wanted help, wanted security and a place to be assured that they had somewhere to go to, and something to hold onto until things got better.
Now, we have a problem on our hands. Not merely for a few jobs, but, those people are back into the community. Idle, kids to feed and more of a problem to us now. This, to me, has killed a few more people with haste.
They don't care about how we would take it, just that they run some semblance of "good governance". For who I ask? If Bahamians can't get a chance to have a breather, in tough times...what are you in office for?
You don't want the Bahamian people up in arms. You don't want that. I think we better be careful who we treat how we treat them.
I want 3 mules and an ox.

And in 2005 former public services minister Fred Mitchell announced the then government's intention to introduce an "Operation Second Chance" program. The program, he explained, would provide pensionable and permanent employment for new and existing general service workers in the public service, to address staffing challenges and to engage disadvantaged adults.
My only question is why a caring government only saw fit to give these Bahamians 3 month contracts?

I guess the people only have bills to pay for 3 months:confused:
why didnt freddy test the courts when he was in power???

They learned from the same FNM government in 1992 onwards, to keep people on temporary pay indefinitely. That changed, as those people are on the chopping block as well.
The only difference was at least, that with a public service permanent, they had status and backing; which most want. But, in this culture, we had them temporary because we wanted to give them jobs, but they were not supposed to stay.
The problem was that many who got those temp jobs, stayed and depended on it. Even after years went by, and nothing happened and was never going to happen. We paid for it, and some left, but some stayed.
We kept them regardless!
ching357 09-06-07, - 05:03 PM :footmouth If they are not fully employed and there is no position for them let them go,it's about time one of the governments started to cut the fat of the civil service and stop trying to use it as a political tool.Am sorry for them but them being hired should have been done right in the first place and there would not be any confussion.:bouncy:
bahmaboy 09-06-07, - 06:47 PM the saddest part about this whole issue is that these people had to be given jobs in the first place
