You must have wondered who was behind the handwriting. That long, thin, skeletal penmanship, carefully lined at the bottom. It is the half-script, half-cursive writing that has announced who you are to immigration officials at every port you have entered since you got your first passport.

You must have sat in the airport filling out immigration forms and flipped through your passport for the date it was issued — that's always the hardest to remember — then wondered, if only for a fragment of a second, who wrote it.

Was it a man or a woman? Did he or she just write in passports all day? How come the handwriting looks so neat and uniform?

Didn't you think that the days of the written passport would last forever?

half of them will probably lose their jobs (creative destruction what can you say) but what i will say is that the writing is always uniform...dont they use a ruler? and i think they spelled my middle name wrong...I can understand though- it is different

I think they are beautiful, my husband's passport from Guyana is handwritten.

I am glad we are finally switching to electronic passports. I always thought that to write in a persons biographical information in such an important document was really archaic in 2007.

As it relates to the e-passports, will brand new passports be issued, or will they replace just the sheet with the biographical information?

just looked, and there is no writing in it at all, all the info is printed using a machine or something .. and that page is laminated. There are 2 long serial numbers there, which I imagine are what they scan. Then ofcourse they stamp the other pages at points of entry, no writing at all though. They also take your photo and fingerprint when you use an e-passport.
