View Full Version : Should we sell sand???
Sunnyjohn 09-12-07, - 10:47 AM Mining firm renews call for sand exports
A local mining operation is suggesting the export of sand could add $10 million a year to the public purse — even if sales directed at sprucing up Florida beaches are banned.
It's not a new argument, rather one James Curling of Country Sand found little support for when he lobbied the last administration. He is now applying to the present one.
"The government is missing out on an economic opportunity that could create 30 to 40 new jobs and generate a minimum of $10 million a year in tax revenue for the government," he said. "Bahamian investors should be given the opportunity to export that aragonite for industrial purposes if not for the beaches of Florida or elsewhere."

Sunnyjohn 09-12-07, - 10:52 AM SOo what do you guys think.
Should we sell the sand (aragonite) from our shores?
Can we use this to boost our exports and bring money into the country?
What do you think of this claim: "Sand is to The Bahamas, what oil is to Iraq," he said. "You cannot deplete the sand here in The Bahamas."
I have ecological concerns. I have seen beach erosion and it is terrible. I would need to see studies on what this would do to beach erosion issues and potential coral beds first.
What are your thoughts?
garnelleo 09-12-07, - 11:10 AM Dont they already extract aragonite near an artificial island near Bimini?
Yahooey 09-12-07, - 11:38 AM i say sell it! this could be another industry for this country. with tourism going downhill we need to find another industry fast. also its time for us to look into LNG.
Shakita 09-12-07, - 11:47 AM I voted no, I am not very much informed but Im sure there will be ecological implications.

from an historical perspective...the Bahamas has always had a hustle; always been able to create a niche for itself( apt times in a gray area of sorts)...this potentially ecological/environmental disaster is not one of um. we must take our environment seriously.
