Mitchell Calls for Functional Cooperation in Caricom
Published: Wednesday September 12th, 2007
Last night, while speaking to the Rotary Club of West Barbados, Opposition Spokeman on Foriegn Affairs and Fox Hill MP, Fred Mitchell called on Caricom leaders to return to the spirit of functional cooperation that once existed.
Citing the peculiar position of the Bahamas as it relates to CSME, Mr. Mitchell pointed out that the Bahamas still has much to gain and a role to play in the overall operations of Caricom. The full text of Mr. Mitchell's address follows.
I want to thank you for the privilege and honour of addressing you this evening.
Given the day that it is, I think that it is appropriate at this time to remember our American friends and others who lost their lives in the events in New York on 11th September 2001.
This is a special opportunity for me to be able to interact with Caribbean civic leaders outside of the context of a political office that restrains you in terms of what you can commit to in policy terms.
I plan to use this time in Opposition, as we prepare to return to government, to develop my ideas on how Caribbean co-operation ought to advance, and what shape that ought to take. To a large extent this has already been determined by the founders of the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME).
You know that The Bahamas is not part of these arrangements for reasons peculiar to our country. Nevertheless there is plenty of scope for participation within the Caricom context, and we at home were heartened to hear of your Prime Minister's new emphasis on functional co-operation. That is the topic of my address this evening and I trust that you will find it enlightening.

Offial visist to a International Meeting-perhaps acceptable
Rotary Meeting-WTF!?
This haughty, arrogant, egotistical attitude of Fred Mitchell and the PLP has gone tooooo far and it needs to stop!!!!!!!
This guy is traveling the the Caribbean refuting official Government decisions and justifying it by saying that the 'PLP' is not in support of the Government. How brassy and out of order! It's as though he's trying to turn the leaders of the Caribbean against the Bahamas Government. Does he not know that the PLP is apart of the Government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas?
Never in the history of this country, or any for that matter can I ever recall the official opposition party traveling to other countries and to try and promote them International and disconnect themselves from their home Government. This is officially crossing the line. It is unprofessional, unscrupulous and unnecessary. Here are some quotes from him in this address:
"The Progressive Liberal Party in The Bahamas for example through Sir Lynden Pindling helped to found the Progressive Labour Party in Bermuda. At one time we provided expertise to them on how to organize elections and attended their conventions."
"The founders of our Progressive Liberal Party in 1953 took a trip to Jamaica and visited with the Peoples National Movement there when they were seeking advice on how to form a political party."
"As Foreign Minister I could not say so but I wonder aloud today why Caricom, or the Commonwealth for that matter, are silent on the question of Darfur and the domestic political situation in Zimbabwe."
"The PLP does not intend to disappear from the region. It does not intend to be silent at home or abroad."
"Indeed, one minister of the government at home has already raised this, because I have set the record straight here in Barbados with regard to Carifesta and the attempt to blame my party for the decision not to host Carifesta in Nassau. I will deal with him once I return home,.."
:jawdroop: He planning on 'dealing' with a Minister! Mr. I’m still Foreign Minster in my head planning VICTIMIZATION OF A REAL MINISTER! ! This guy is delusional. HE IS NO LONGER IS FOREGIN MINISTER! The PLP is NO LONGER THE GOVERNMENT!
Someone tell me, what da hell goin on!?
