Even though he has met the age of retirement, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson, 61, will not retire from the top ranks of the Royal Bahamas Police Force until he is asked to do so, the veteran officer told The Nassau Guardian yesterday.

Ferguson's name has been raised in political circles by observers who claim it is unfair for the senior officer to remain on the Force while younger officers were being asked to retire early by Commissioner of Police Paul Farquharson.

Some political pundits have even suggested that Ferguson's recent promotion to Acting Deputy Commissioner came as a result of his reported close ties with the governing Free National Movement (FNM) Party. He is also the brother of FNM Chairman Johnley Ferguson.

The retirement age for police officers is 55. He noted, however, that officers asked to retire should have served more than 30 years — and in some cases 40 years — on the Force.

Mr. Ferguson has already given 41 years of service to the RBPF(most commendable) and I believe it is time for him to retire, especially in light of reports of other officers serving less time being asked to retire. There needs to room and opportunity for younger, talented officers to assume more positions of responsability in order to introduce new and innovated methods of crime fighting.

In light of some of the situation going around, it is probably vital that we need the senior officers more than ever. We can't just "push out" everyone one time, and some of these young officers have no idea how to act.
