Err, they forgot about the Chinese territory of MACAU! It is right next to China and has the LARGEST and NEWEST casinos in the WORLD.

They make more $$ in MACAU than they do in VEGAS.

What is the PLAN to compete with Macau? You can't just say it and wish it so.

Yes, they borrowed my info from a BI post, but lest hope it helps us.

The Bahamas is in a strong position to attract Chinese highrollers who want to combine a vacation stay with their love for gambling.

what other incentive would an asian highroller have in The Bahamas as opposed to Vegas or AC or even Hollywood (Hard Rock)?

Perhaps the tropical local, if we sell it as an unspoiled paradise.

Macau does have some NICE beaches though.

Once again, there is nothing to compete with, it is on the other side of the globe.

people with money can get on planes and go see the next side of the world- as the thousands do every day...I believe china's middle class is well over 100 million folks so yes we are in fact competing to get their dollars from somewhere else.

They are hardly the average Casino tourist right now though, but if you mean there is a new market to tap into, sure. However it is still 2 totally different products so its not really a competition. Why would they go there instead of here? The obvious reasons would be the language and the shorter travel time.

Rory,

Man das da same thinking dat gat Bahamians tourism in a heap of mess.

*suck teeth @ Rory* LOL! :D

Chinese wealth is through the roof. They are reknown travellers (even if some of you think they "can't leave"). Hopping on a plane is NOTHING for the Chinese.

The Chinese enjoy novelty. If we can tap into that wealth pool and make them think of the Bahamas as a viable destination we can add a few million visitors a year.

I read your post. I know there is a difference.

I think we SHOULD try to attract the Chinese, Indian, South African, Brazilian and Australian visitors. They are the new rich. Those are the countries where money is being made and tourism dollars FOLLOW the rich!

My entire argument is based around the fact that it SHOULD be the BAHAMAS overtaking VEGAS NOT Macau.

We had a head start and we squandered it. Steve Wynn, the Las Vegas Sands and all the BIG casino resorts bypassed us and went on to Macau because of our lack of vision.

I respect Mr Sol Kerzner, but we are so content to rest on that one achievement, that we did not take our casino product to it's full potential.

~~~~~
ps. Even 'average" Chinese who aren't millionaires but 'middle class' are taking trips to Macau.
what's your point?
what you mean two total different products?
Why would they go where?
People with money make time to do whatever they want?
sunny you named the BRIC countries.
I think we need to stop discriminating against people and the money we think they dont have...we just need to go out there and get them to bring whatever they have here!
Taffi,
If Bahamians would only learn that the whole world is FULL of rich folks with money to spend, LOOKING for place to spend it, they would STOP concentrating all our tourism advertising dollars in One small part if the US (the NE).
It is so frustrating!
Dis " we ein want dem foreigners to visit" attitude ga cause us plenty heartache.
