accordning to leslie miller, that how much is lost in custom revenue, due to the ever rising cost of the importation of dmaged and written off used cars from the united states.

he claims that these cars are not fit to drive in the states, and are legaly not clear to do so!!1

10 million dollars though!!!

Hooray for Mr. Miller. say what you like about this Minister he is working hard for the country. He has a lot of guts to take on the issues that he does when he could just sit back like some may have and get a piece for himself. We need more like Mr. Miller. He is a good MP and one of the least appreciated Ministers in my view.

Never mind the noise in the market.

Regulation is needed, but Bahaminas do not have to buy those cars.

The truth is, you can buy a 4-year old japanese car for a fraction of the price of a new one. They will ride with you for ten years, and I do not think those coming from Japan are wrecks.

A new car is the worst investment one can make. It depreciates very quickly, the roads accelerate the depreciation.

So, if everyone buys new cars, the govt. gets $10mil, the car dealers get $40ml, the banks get $80mil. Thanks everyone for looking out for me.

How could I ever sleep if these folks did not have my interest at heart.

I think the loss of the 10 Million upsets Mr. Miller as much, if not more, than any danger inherent in those cars.

well what do you think man...
he is definatly pissed that customes is losing 10 million..but he forgot before 2002, he was probably driving two of those rebuilt cars.

but, the issue of whether or not what motivated him is moot....making a proffit is what we need to generate a little fluff..
if he works it out....i wonder how much of it will he steal???

My question here is can most Bahamians afford a new brand car?

But forget all that!
Why do we have to import foreign cars?
Why don't the government invest $10 million dollars in a Bahamian car factory on an island like Andros?
Why can't I drive a car called Flamingo or Blue Marlin? Something that I could relate to.
If we produce our own cars we can export and not only that, we can have a reason to ban some foreign cars from coming in the country.
I would be happy to drive a Bahamian car.

We need to stop complaining and find solutions.

Why don't we talk about what is being done with all the millions that customs make each year? How is that invested?

Well, it doesnt even have to be a Bahamian car, if they can build a Nissan or Chrysler in Mexico, then we sure as heck can build them here too! Problem with Bahamian government is, they wont give 1 to win a hundred, if you catch my drift ..

Too many japanese cars coming in here now, are really just junk, sputting out black smoke (hint: diesel), sure they can fix that, but so many people buying these are buying them because they cant afford a good vehicle, so they say spend/borrow $2000 to buy a japense import, and dont service it as they cant afford to. If you dont service an old vechicle, it will sput black, or blue, smoke, and eventually break down.

A problem even beyond this is, too many vehicles coming into this little island on a whole, there are now too many vehicles, or too many households have too many vehicles, this is a small island, only so much room.

If I have to pay $500-600 a month for a loan on a new good non smoke sputting vehicle, at least others can spend a couple dollars to service their pieces of crap!

and yes, where do they spend all the money made from our high customs taxes??

we are not an industrial country!!!

to improt the iron steele and foreign consultants to run an operation like this will cost the bahamian consumer more!

just ask trinidad...they had the bright idea to get into the car making bussiness...AND IT BOMBED!
it cost too much, and was no proffit to be made.

Not everyone can see the same vision and failures of others never stopped me from pursuing something.

You be cool :)

well i read that story in the tribune and i have a beef.

minister leslie miller said in that news story that he was told that the biggest shop that restores these wrecked vehicles is located through Lily of the Valley Corner.

well i live there & i see no evidence of such a repair shop anywhere.
i would like to invite the minister to take a walk through Lily of the Valley Corner and see if he can find this repair shop he mentioned in that newspaper story.

if he finds no evidence then i would like him to retract his statement & make a public apology to the good people of Lilyof the Valley Corner.

if not we will gather ourselves together & sue him for slander.

he should get his facts straight first before stating such a bold untruth on the front page of a daily newspaper.

That's really not called for.
We have no proof as to the motive of the minister and we are not here to make accusations about anyone.

Let's just all try to be fair in this.
I will try to get the minister to reply to the comments made here.
