OJ facing 30 years on robbery charge justified

Despite being heckled, OJ Simpson manages a smile as he is transferred to a Las Vegas jail

OJ Simpson is again facing the possibility of life in prison.

The former American football star was last night being held at a Las Vegas jail awaiting a court hearing on charges he robbed two sports memorabilia collectors at gunpoint. He faces at least seven charges relating to the incident, including two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of burglary with a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit burglary.

If convicted, 60-year-old Simpson could sentenced to a maximum of 30 years for each robbery count alone.

As Simpson, who was cleared of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife and her friend, was led into a Las Vegas jail on Sunday, onlookers yelled "Guilty!" and "No Johnnie to save you this time, OJ!" - a reference to Johnnie Cochran, the late lawyer who secured his murder acquittal.

advertisementThe fallen NFL star is being held without bail and due to appear in court on Thursday. His lawyer, Yale Galanter, said he hoped to get Simpson released before the hearing. "Mr. Simpson is not guilty of these charges," Mr Galanter said. Simpson has denied any wrongdoing and said he was merely retrieving items that had been stolen from him. He has also denied any guns were involved in the incident at the Palace Station casino on Thursday.

A apparent audio tape recording of the alleged standoff between Simpson and two memorabilia collectors was yesterday released by celebrity news website TMZ.com. In the recording Simpson demands: "Don't let nobody out this room.... Think you can steal my (expletive) and sell it?"

TMZ said the recording was made on a handheld recorder belonging to Thomas Riccio, an auctioneer who claimed Simpson called him several weeks ago to say some collectors were selling some of his items. Mr Riccio set up a meeting for Simpson with collectors Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong under the guise of a private collector interested in buying Simpson's items.

Describing the incident, Mr Fromong told ABC's Good Morning America yesterday: "The door burst open and they came in commando style, O.J. Simpson and some of his people, I guess you would call it, with guns drawn. O.J. at that time was saying, 'I want my stuff. I want my stuff."'

Simpson was accompanied by a number of men he met at a wedding cocktail party.

Mr Fromong said Simpson was the last of the men to enter the hotel room and was not carrying a gun. "O.J. was the last person I was expecting to see and when I saw him I was just thinking, 'O.J., how can you be this stupid?"' Mr Fromong told CBS's The Early Show.

He said afterwards Simpson had left him a message saying that some of Mr Fromong's items were "mixed up" with his and asking how he could give them back.

Simpson will beat this racist, gatcha rap, easy. The OJ haters need to get over the Nicole thing...think about all those blacks that were hung out to dry by the justice system there and it might make it easier. If Nicole was black, the racists would have said the biatch probably desrved it. Somebody metioned the brutal kidnapping and torture of a black woman by rednecks in West Virginia...I am still waiting for Bill O'Reilly to take that on in his talking points memo...

Actually it was one of his sidekicks that taped it:

"The tape was recorded by Thomas Riccio, who co-owns the auction house Universal Rarities. Riccio met up with Simpson just before the confrontation at the Palace Station Casino on Thursday night.

We're told Riccio was on hand to help Simpson prove certain memorabilia being auctioned by Alfred Beardsley was ill-gotten. Riccio says he believed Simpson was going to confront Beardsley in the hotel room to give him an ultimatum -- either hand over the goods or Simpson would call the cops.

Riccio turned his Olympus digital voice recorder on before the group entered the room -- a group that included Simpson and four other men. Almost immediately, Simpson went wild, hurling profanities at Beardsley and another memorabilia dealer, Bruce Fromong."

You think OJ dosen't know? I think he knows more about everyone around him than we would even be aware to give him credit for. But I guess not enough NOT to get caught in this. After all, no one ever said he was.....a brilliant criminal.

I think he relishes in the fact that the Goldmans can't catch him when he makes his money. And some of the same people who call him murderer behind his back go to get their stuff signed by him, so that they...or he can sell if for profit.

I always thought he did the crime though. Looking back at the coverage and opinions that I was not aware of then (I was just too small to understand), it seemed like there was an underlying hope for him to be aquitted for a crime people knew he either commited, or was instrumentaly apart of. It is perhaps a small but monumental payback for all the innocent racial killing and lynching of the Jim Crow days, where the killing was not only overlooked, but encouraged. If you want to talk about African American history, he is probably the first one to be notably suspected in killing, get away with it, and make money from the attention! Kinda Italian mob-ish like.

young man you are so wise!
oj didnt kill them people- his son did! I look back on that era too (and Im ashamed today that I rejoiced at his non- guilty verdict) He shouldnt have been the one to get the due- he was undeserving but isnt that how it always is? oj is so cocky and pompous and he knows those white people will stay after his butt but he doesnt care he still carrying on in his arrogant way- you can only respect his game.

Yall see all these criminals that are coming out to testify against him .. i mean geez .. definitely some kind of setup by one of them .. probably the same one that recorded the audio. I mean its stupid, if he is being arrested for that, then the others should be also, meanwhile that bum who recorded the audio (and was there too) was on CNN talking to whats his name! They all obviously partook in the incident .. gun or not.
