Can anyone tell me why on earth, to this day, we still have water pumps on the main road. I mean, the other day I saw a long aspt line on East Street with people waiting to pump water. Such things should be on a side street I think? And who pays for this water in any regards?

When I came to NP for the first time I was shocked to see that. Why are there water pumps at all? I would think everyone has plumbing now....NO?!!??

I think though, that even if there would still be water pupms it would be better than a pump no more than 2 feet above the ground, where any creature on four legs can touch! I saw this cool public water dispenser on carmicheal not far from Bamboo shack....somthing like that. And then in some developed asian countries things like that look like, and are as ubiquitous as public telephone booths!

We have one in the centre of the vilage and for many that is the only way to have potable water. I am sure it is a free goverment tingum as it is not piped into your home. There is no convenience in lugging 5-10 clorox (cleaned) filled with water 100s of yards to your home to drink, cook and wash with.

because in that area of Fox Hill, many people dont have running water, probably not electric either.

I was not talking Fox Hill, but many here do not have electricity, bathrooms or running water. My neighbor has a hand pump for a well, not even city water pump (spigot), no bathroom, they bath outside and wash clothes in 5 gallon buckets and other things in the bush.

Is that the 21st century?

This is the only source of potable water for many people. The bills for those public pumps are paid by the Government every month. Yes, those bills are paid! In the family islands they are also paid.

Contrary to what many believes, the Bahamas Government pays electricty, water and phone bills among other things. Those funds are a part of the yearly budget allocated to each department. They even pay for tickets on Bahamasair. When you see an unpaid bill for any Government department check the department head or the Ministry of Finance they are responsible for payment.

man there are two in fox hill.
One by the round about and the 2nd right in front of the police station. One time the entrance of the police station was blocked due to the long line at the water pump.

Talking about long lines at a pump, in Grand Bahama after the two hurricanes, word spread that there were two hand pumps in the ghetto area of Freeport, well I tell you no lies, the line was longer then the line to go to hell, poor people, rich people all lined up to get water. The rich folks would should up around 2-3 am in the morning parking their navigators and expeditions far so no one could see them.

Thank God for those pumps.
