According to Ms. McKenzie, her department is prepared to start taking legal action against stall owners on the strip to enforce the importance of keeping the area clean and presentable.
"What the department is now doing is going to each store itself and each stall owner/operator and asking them to comply with a number of things."
She said if stall owners do not co-operate, the department would serve a public health order and take them to court.
"We don’t have [the authority] to just shut you down on the spot, but we do have the power to take you through the court system or to the police and then have you closed," she said. "We are totally prepared to do it."
