Word is, if they don't start taking more responsibility for the mess, they will end up closed down and in court!

....Arawak Cay is an ongoing issue," she said.

Ms. McKenzie blamed the waste on that site on people who refuse to use the available waste bin.

"It’s purely a matter of persons not utilizing the bin that is there. There is an adequate bin there. It’s not the placement of the bin, or whether or not there is a bin but simply the fact that persons are not using it as they ought to," she said.

According to Ms. McKenzie, her department is prepared to start taking legal action against stall owners on the strip to enforce the importance of keeping the area clean and presentable.

"What the department is now doing is going to each store itself and each stall owner/operator and asking them to comply with a number of things."

She said if stall owners do not co-operate, the department would serve a public health order and take them to court.

"We don’t have [the authority] to just shut you down on the spot, but we do have the power to take you through the court system or to the police and then have you closed," she said. "We are totally prepared to do it."

So Ms. McKenzie has changed her tune and is taking responsibilty for her department's inaction and being proactive I see. Good on her!

It is high time that these vendors are held accountable for their area and the state it is in. They are the ones that benifit from the area thus they should be the ones to ensure that the area is kept spic and span. I wonder what they think of themselves how they keep their area's. To spend all day every day around filth like that and NOT do anything about it speaks volumes about how they perceive themselves.

Question! Who actually owns the stalls on Arawak Cay. I was told that the spaces were being rented but by looking at the extravagant structures that some of them have I really have to wonder!

That goes for every square inch of Nassau, doesn't it?
