View Full Version : Stem Cell Research
This is a complected process. I am not a scientist, but I think I understand it. If there is anyone who knows more about this please correct me. I am still learning! I might be 100% incorrect but I think this is an important issue.
What are Stem Cells. Simply put, (you can do more research in line) Stem cells are undeveloped cells. By that I mean they have not become something, i.e. an eye, a liver etc. but they have the potential to grow.
Where do they come from? In the order of their viability and usefulness; 1. From human embryos. 2. The umbilical cord blood of a newly delivered child. 3. There are even such things as Adult Stem cells.
How do you get them? In the case of the umbilical cord, from the cast off cords. But the best is from human embryos that have been aborted or grown in a "dish." However, this process requires killing the embryos
What can they be used for? To repair damaged cells in the human body - repair spinal cord damage, heart disease or even to cure cancer. Potentially they could cure, or diminish 1001 different illnesses. (Please note all of this is still experimental, it does not exist yet, that is why it is called "research.")
How do you feel about this? Is it "playing God?" Stem cells don't make life but they do, or could, replicate it.
How do you feel about using Embryonic Stem Cells? (Knowing that the embryo is destroyed in the process.)
I understand that a lab in Grand Bahama was doing this research but research stopped due to them not having the proper permits. Should we, once the right permits are obtained, allow this research to go on in the Bahamas?
Alien 08-05-04, - 10:17 AM liberals are always trying to push the envelope on abortion and embryonic research!
i could imagine if it was tissue, but it is fertilized eggs they are trying to manipulate!
but, i guess its all about science, nbut i do feel that every fertilized being from conception deserves the right to fulfill its natural order, until it expires itself!

They have to! If it was left to some, we would still not have Aspirin yet!

I don't like the idea of using Human Embryos but, Human Embryos are aborted by the millions every day. As it stands now they are thrown away, or incinerated. If we must have abortions why can we not make some good come out of all that evil? Lets use some of them for research to help the living.

I am not too familiar with Stem Cells but I know about abortion.
You say let some good come out of it but does the means justify the end?
Why use Stem Cells? It's like they stopped right there and said: "This is it!" "And there are no other alternatives." The devil is a lier.
I will start a thread on the subject of "When is Abortion right?"
......You say let some good come out of it but does the means justify the end?
In some cases, may be yes, but in this case abortions are legal, they happen, Why throw them away? I do not support abortion but it is happening, why can't some good come out of it? Is it better that the human embryos died for nothing? I could not support abortion just to get the cells. I could not support developing an embryo in a dish, to get the cells. But those who are aborted for other reasons, I say used them!
Why use Stem Cells? It's like they stopped right there and said: "This is it!" "And there are no other alternatives."
I don't think they have stopped there. Research goes on in other ways to overcome illness. Stem Cell is but one.
The devil is a lier.
What does that mean, in the context of Stem Cell?
Delroy 08-05-04, - 02:47 PM It's just seems a bit funny that people can't see the truth behind all of this.
I asked you "Why Stem Cells?". How did they come up with this in the first place? Did they went looking in this area? And if they did; who told them that they would find a cure in that way?
It's just seems a bit funny that people can't see the truth behind all of this.
Don't get that!

They had a theory that it might work. They have to try it out!
And if they did; who told them that they would find a cure in that way?
No one did! It may turn out to be a fruitless path but it must be explored.

Stem cells have been proven to cure various degenerative diseases in laboratory animals, and there is no reason why the same would not be true in humans. I have watched my own father die from a neurodegenerative disease and if stem cell research had progressed to the point where a therapy was available for him, I would have been completely behind it. Abortion is a thorny issue, but watching a loved one die slowly and painfully is one of the most terrible human experiences to have. Do the research. Cure these diseases.

I watched both, both! of my parents and a sister, die from diseases that Stem Cell Research might have cured. I stress might! But we will never know until the research is done. It may prove not to work, but it is worth the chance that it might work. We should at least give those who suffer a chance.

Its like when Columbus set sail for the new world. These scientist are a bunch of Columbus's Hope this helps.

and if left up to them..we would be taking raw cocaine and herione inspite of the mild alternative!

exactly my point...NONE ARE RIGHT IN MY EYES!
the manipulation of human life under any extreme is wrong and unethical!
like i said abortion and left wing fanatics are all for pushing the envelope on embryonic manipulation.
we cant give them the bird nest for the bird..ALL ARE WRONG!

columbus also brought about the slaughter of the innocents....
even though a new generation of people not of this lands are thriving..but at the expense the original flavor!
not all of the times that is good...
Delroy 08-06-04, - 01:54 PM The world is filled with so-called “Good Things”.
Why does an HIV patient need to smoke marijuana when they can simply take a TLC shot?
Doesn't anyone think that it's a little funny that out of all the ways in the world to get TLC they want to get it from smoking marijuana?
They are just rebellious! Searching for a Kingdom that they can't find.
Y2K I like your points
What has your posting to do with Stem Cells? Anyhow I will answer.
The world is filled with so-called “Good Things”.
Why does an HIV patient need to smoke marijuana when they can simply take a TLC shot?
Perhaps they choose to take the alternative therapy. Would you not allow them that choice?
Doesn't anyone think that it's a little funny that out of all the ways in the world to get TLC they want to get it from smoking marijuana?
No!
They are just rebellious! Searching for a Kingdom that they can't find.
Perhaps they have found the kingdom. Are you saying that any dying person, who chooses to use Marijuana, an old medicament, to ease their sufferings has no connection to the Kingdom?
Y2K I like your points
His point was that Christopher Colombus claimed this part of the world for God and for Spain. In the name of those two entities it lead to the destroying of millions of souls. Not a proud moment of Spain, or God for that matter. The slaughter came from ignorance. Mankind has spent a lifetime trying to dispel ignorance. The Church has spent equally long trying to reinforce it.

The Stem Cell Network - is a partnership of Canadian Government's Networks of Centres of Excellence ( http://www.nce.gc.ca/ ), Industry and Charities.
Both of these sites give some detail on what stem cells are all about.
