Comments. At one time if you could think of an item you could find it in the food stores - from quail eggs to kippers! Now we just get the same old thing and each week the price goes up and up. If you want to cook an exciting meal you will have trouble finding all the ingredients here.

Well you know this is something that gets to me big time, as the quality of food here in the stores is awful, thats one thing the US has over us big time .. we is a let down in that area. Its not just a poor selection, close too early, etc, but its the way the food is kept and handled - which is beyond healthy in most cases. Poor refrigerators, bad generators, staff handling food with little to know knowledge of food safety, etc.

Sunnyjohn 09-23-07, - 05:35 PM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_brand
Generic brand, a brand for a product that does not have an associated brand or trademark other than the trading name of the business providing the product
Sometimes they call them "house brands" or "store brands"

I know what Generic is, but is there such thing as Generic meat?? I mean they all have name brands, just there are cheaper less well known ones.

You have no quit in you.....
1. Are you happy with the quality of grocery goods available on your island?
Nope. Well, in some of the "posh" areas, the produce is fresh. But, in most of the regular areas, the fruits in particular are rotten. The meat is "ok", but it is not grade A meat for the most part.
2. How is the produce in your local store?
See above.
3. What fresh veggies/fruit do you usually buy?
Banana's, pears, peaches and apples.
4. WHat fresh veggies/fruit WOULD you buy or like to see in your supermarket?
Apples, pears, peaches, Bananas, brocoli, cauliflower, peas, cabbage and carrots.
5. How often do you visit the market?
Once a week.
6. How would you rate the level of customer service in your local market?
Depends. In the Bahamas it is "ok"....could be better. Here, in the UK, it is HORRIBLE!
We are MUCH BETTER than these people....seriously!
US customer service is the best....truly.
7. IS the store generally clean?
Depends on which store. Mom and Popps stores have issues....but the regular food stores, including Lil General's are "ok". They een rat infested or anything, just "ok".....
8. What kinds of meat do you buy at the grocery store?
Porck Chops, lamb chops, steak and beef as well as ground beef. Chicken obviously and ground turkey; likes them for burgers.
9. Wha kinds of meat WOULD you buy or would like to see available.
Lamb chops, lamb shoulers, fresh pork and roast beef.
10. Do you buy toiletries or sundry items in your market?
Sure.
11. Does your market have a pharmacy?
Not that I know of. They have a drug corner. But no pharmacy.
12. Does your market have a quick stop clinic?
AHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAAHAHHAAAHAAAAAAAAAAHHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
13. How much do you pay for 5lbs of chicken?
Can't recall.
14. How much do you pay for a gallon of milk?
Over here I pay about 60p to £1. But at home, about $1.50 should be GOOD for a gallon of milk. Allthough, I don't buy milk at home and rather use evaporated milk in my cereals and cooking.
15. Would you shop at a market that sold high quality generics and provided a clean, well lit store with low prices?
Sure would. In fact, if it is internationally tested, would buy cheap any given day. Food is food, and once it is tested, would go for it. But my medicines are somewhat different. Would rather my medicines from people and agencies I trust.
16. Would a full service grocery store do good business on your island (if you are on one of the Out Islands)?
Maybe. If it had a good mix and a true service. 24hr grocery stores with pharmacy in hand seems to be a good idea. Just adjust the operating cost and the labour and we can have a real go at it.
17. IN NP or FPO, could a generic store compete with existing stores for your business?
Sure could. In fact, they would dog out the comp.

Sunnyjohn 09-23-07, - 05:43 PM I know what Generic is, but is there such thing as Generic meat?? I mean they all have name brands, just there are cheaper less well known ones.
LOL! Not the meat.
The dry goods...Milk, ice cream...
I know Bahamians are brand loyal, but I am wondering if they would step out for high quality "house brands" if it saved them money.

I buy the cheapest when I can, regardless of the name, so long as it is good. Some things like Paper Plates though I dont go cheap on, as the cheap ones can smell of bleach, and you are putting your food on it. Garbage bags, I dont check, cheaper the better for me; Hot Dogs, same thing, Toilet Tissue, same thing, cheapest is best. ;)

17. IN NP or FPO, could a generic store compete with existing stores for your business?
Yes it would!! I am pretty sure of it.
on this note .. the shelves are disgusting in most of these stores .. i was going to buy something the other day from the dairy section, it was a milk shake drink, went to grab it then realized the shelve next to the the lid of it, was where the margarines etc were .. anyway that shelve had some green and brown grime all over it .. was really sickening. I told one of the workers there even though I know he probably didnt care .. couple days later the grime was still all over that shelf. Ofcourse most of the shelves are like that anyway, get the items home sometimes have to wash them with warm water before putting them in a clean fridge.
Over here I pay about 60p to £1. But at home, about $1.50 should be GOOD for a gallon of milk.
I dont buy milk but note the last 2 peeps said it costs $5 here. ;)

Shakita 09-23-07, - 05:58 PM I dont buy milk but note the last 2 peeps said it costs $5 here. ;)
I actually went and checked on my fridge and is $6.19 but on the other hand the gallon of orange juice dropped price dramatically!! It went from almost 9 dollars to 5.

One of my projects is tracking the price of dairy items.
Milk in the Midwest was about $1.89 a gallon in Feb/March. I paid $2.89 for a gallon on Friday.
A 12oz bag of grated sharp cheddar was about $1.59. The price on Friday was $2.29.
Corn prices went up and has driven up the prices of dairy along with it.
