Ian Strachan's Track Road Theatre Company, fresh off the successful completion of its children's summer camp, Drama Rama in July, announces that it has been given the opportunity to perform the acclaimed play Diary of Souls in what could be a three country tour this November.
Diary of Souls, a one act drama written and directed by Dr. Strachan, is a fictional interpretation of tragic events that took place in Exuma in July 1990 involving the Defense Force and a group of Haitian immigrants. Considered by some to be his best play, the group is staging it in honor of the 200th anniversary of Haitian Independence.
When intercepted by the Defence Force, a Haitian vessel allegedly capsizes because the passengers panic and move to one side of the boat. Many Haitians lost their lives despite the valiant effort of the Defence Force officers to rescue those who fell over board. Those who perished were buried in a common grave on Bitter Guana Cay. Rumors surfaced that some of the Defence Force officers needed therapy after the event and that the true number of Haitians who perished and the cause of their deaths, was being hidden by the Government. In the inquest that followed none of the survivors testified.
Track Road has been invited to perform Diary of Souls in New Orleans at Tulane University, November 4-7, and in Barbados at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, November 11-14. Negotiations are also underway to add a stop in Trinidad for the group as well. The group expects to take on tour with them a version of the original set designed by artist John Cox in 1998 .
Track Road has scheduled a public audition for Thursday August 26 at 8pm at the College of the Bahamas, in Room F-7. “We need to begin preparations immediately,” said Dr. Strachan. “Opportunities like this don't come along all the time, so we have to represent ourselves well. We need 3 male actors and 2 female actors who are determined, disciplined and cooperative. And most of all, who can guarantee that they can make these trips in November barring some unforeseen emergency. In fact, we need 6 males and 4 females because I want understudies in case folks can't travel to all the necessary destinations.”
Dr. Strachan said he hopes that this will be the first of many more opportunities to take Bahamian art to the region and the world. He said the group is presently seeking sponsors to assist them in the exciting endeavor. Anyone interested in trying out for Diary of Souls should remember to come out on Thursday August 26 at 8pm, in COB's Room F-7. Or you can call 392-0275.
