A major renovation is underway at the 206-year-old Government House at an estimated cost of $1.5 million. The work includes the installation of a residential elevator for the comfort of aging Governors General, an improved air-conditioning system in the Ballroom, the construction of toilet facilities on the Upper Ground and a storage building.

The renovation and restoration of Government House which is being led by Alicia Oxley, Projects Officer with the Antiquities, Museums and Monuments Corporation is expected to take 12 months.

Meantime, the Office of the Governor-General has been relocated to the Ground Floor of Charlotte House, Shirley and Charlotte Streets, pending completion of the project.

Ms. Oxley, a restoration architect said, “We are trying to bring Government House back as much as possible to its original state.”

For real! I don't think it has a good "face lift" sense The Duke of Windsor was here in the 1940s.

My old man said that you went into the house with your head down, not out of respect to the Governor but to make sure you did not fall through a hole in the floor.

What is Ironic is that the last time Govt House was renovated was under the F.N.M Govt. I visited recently and the place is shabby, it needs the work.

Maintenance is one thing, and whoever is doing it need to find another job. A good restoration is another thing. The fact that we have to spend 1.5m shows that the maintence staff cant be all that good.
