I used to teach a class on self-defense for women. It was not so much a "throw-you-to-the-ground" sort of thing. It was more on the lines of how to keep out of situations before they happened and once in a situation how to get out by using every thing at hand as a weapon. The average women's hand bag is an arsenal of weapons - once you know how to use them.

Yes, for us men also. What do you want me to say? I would love to be able to carry a hand gun, and wear a bullet proof and stab resistant vest myself, but they are illegal. :(

Do like me, always be aware, dont trust ANYONE, get bars on doors and windows, have alarm and cameras .. and get your hands on anything that can be used as a weapon but at the same time remains legal to have on your person or inside the vehicle/home.

we need night buses...
street lights everywhere...
well-lit busstops with emergency phones...
officers posted every two hundred yards in urban areas...and REGULAR and FREQUENT vehicle patrols in all areas...

and since women are most likely to be violated by someone they know or that they are acquainted with...a national focus on...inter-personal skills...intimate partner violence..anger management...

and we need to address the alcohol use in this country...
and drug abuse...

Not automatically, if it was self defense. But one never knows when the police are involved. A student of mine, in New York, was attacked in the park. They tried to rape her. Following my instructions in class, she broken one guys arm and ruptured the ear drums of another. She was charged with using excessive force. By the way - she was 81 years old! The case was laughed out of court.

All of these things are true, but sometimes, we all need to exercise some good common sense so that we do not become victims of crime.
Being alert to your surroundings is a good start, especially when driving and parking at night. Leaving the vehicle running while "dashing" into the gas station c-store, or keeping windows down and doors un-locked when going thru drive-thru's is also very dangerous and leaves you open to crimes of opportunity.
Finally, we as women must exercise our God-given intuition when getting involved in relationships. if it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, then duh.....it is a duck. We must stop thinking that we can change violent, obsessive and possessive behavior....When these character traits start to manifest themselves....just leave.
