View Full Version : Clifton Heritage.
I took a trip out west to the Clifton Heritage site. I was shocked! I used to hunt there. In fact I hunted there for twenty years or more. This is how it used to look.

There were wild Orchards there. Trees full of berries for the birds to eat. Wonderful trees of all kinds! Look at it now, or at least a part of it!

Up the road are the "Slave Huts." You can't get to them as they are fenced in. I hope that is temporary. There is another parking lot cleared out of the bush near the huts. Are these really slave huts? Possible but a few have gun ports (or slits) in them. Slaves had guns?

This was a wild place. It took work to see its wonders. Once you set foot into the bush you were in another world, in another time. There were bees, wild dogs, racoons, rock holes, snakes! Lots of snakes and I even came across a wild pig there years ago. I walked every inch of it in my day. Now it will be turned into a plastic tourist site were anyone can go with little effort but they will not see it as I did. It is a shame when the wild is "tamed." It loses something.
man not one light there, when they going to start building up that part of the island.

Could be but there never were lights. I am sure they will put them in the parking lot!!!
When one got there early in the morning while the sun was still down it was so dark that you might as well have been blind! Slowly, the sun came up - with gold or pink light. What a sight!!!!:)

back then you didn't have criminals waiting for you in the bush though ;)

Oh yes you did! It was a prime place. It was just one of its other dangers. I came across stolen cars, wallets and hand bags by the hundreds. But I think when it gets "civilized" it will be worse.

wasnt as long ago as I imagined then .. :D
Anyway right now you dont want to go out that way at night, heck you dont want to go outside in your own yard at night these days .. just too dangerous.

I go back 6 years when you could drive down and dive off the rocks, fish and enjoy the day. The water off the big rocks was beautiful, even scuba divers came to the spot. We once met a guy from University of Miami researching the giant sea urchins.
Well, those days are gone now, for sure.

Those were the days. I go back 50 years when once you passed Cable Beach you were nearly in the wild. lol. By the time you got to Clifton - why God did not even get out that far! It was wild country. :)

Sold to the highest bidder I guess.

I guess!
There was another great wild place. Up by Mount Pleasant, where Good-Fellows is now. There is a little hill there before you get to Good-Fellows. There is a pond there by the old Lyford Key Gun range. Up on the hill is a magic looking forest - full of air-plants of all kinds and sizes. I used to shoot there too. Can't now! Can't even walk up there - trespassing!
Here is a picture of the pond, taken years ago, by early morning light.
