Does anyone get a good night's sleep in Nassau? If it's not barking dogs or wailing cats, it's neighbours noisily coming in late at night or slamming doors when they get up at some ungodly hour.
Then there are the walkers and joggers who think their loud conversations and raucous laughter are perfectly okay as they stamp through slumbering neighbourhoods as early as 4 a.m.
Oh,and I almost forgot the screeching tires and thundering motorbikes!
The only time I get a really good night's sleep is when I take a trip to a Family Island or Florida

This morning at 5.45 a.m. we were woken up by the sounds of heavy equipment on West Bay Street, where we live. On looking out the window we saw an "army" of men out there, positioning traffic diversion cones and getting ready to do tree trimming, which they had started the day before! By 6.30 a.m. the chain saws had started.
Surely there are some laws in place for Works departments not to start any noisy work until a certain time, like maybe 8 a.m.?
Also, isn't right before hurricane season the time to do tree trimming? I guess it's all in preparation for the much heralded Cable Beach Junior Junkanoo!

the issue of the workers early in the morning .... is a conflicting one.
if they did the work starting at 8 a.m., the oncoming traffickers would only complain "why they can't do this early in the morning when no one wake" totally excluding you folks that live there...
how i figure, whatever ministry or govt/privt adgency needs to do maintenance or road work... should notify the residents of the area. i am not sayin they should debate it with you folks...because in nassau, MOST reisidents would tell them to carry their equipment somewhere else and shove it where the sun don't shine unless they are getting a free service ....or repaired service from the work the workers are doing.
they should simply leave a note/letter for the residents of the area under your door that resembles something similar to the following:
"To the resident of this home,
XYZ corporation needs to repair a distribution line that is located 35 ft from your doorstep, to the right of your property's entrance. the scheduled date for this repair is septembuary 36th, 2005 @ 4 a.m.<example date....i do know the day/months of the year> please excuse our presence, and we do apologize for any inconvenience caused.
your sincerely,
president of the XYZ corporation
joe blow"
simple. is it not?

Excellent suggestion, mp0sta.
I'd be much more tolerant if they did that!
IF I ever get to see my representative for the area, I'll mention it to him.

I know this is an old issue but since I am a new member am just seeing it and find it interesting. In fact I have started staying in hotels when I visit in some part due to that very problem! The congestion in residential Nassau continues to grow and the quality of life to deteriorate. I too find it more difficult to relax or rest if I stay with relatives or friends, in various parts of hte island. Every time I vist now I joke that I could swear that yet another piece of the rock has sunk into the sea since land space continues to decrease!!!!!
