I put this question out there my brothers and sisters because of my observation as us as a people you know what i think the bahamas could be much further ahead in the world but because of envy and backbiting we are left behind a lot of young people has ideas to help develop the country but most are knocked down if someone do not agree with it or the older generation just want to keep things the way they are. Even on this board i observe what im talkng about so we can rant and rave as much as we want but if we dont come together as a people and move our country to the top sad to say we never will get it together think people we are so near the USA but our country is under developed countries much further are more developed than us whats the problem someone plse tell me?

It's more than just backbiting and envy that's keeping us from first world status. Economically, we just can't do it. You have to look at our import figures vs. or export figures. The ratio is crazy. We are not and will never be financially stable for a very long time. We borrow too much money each year from International Banks, etc, to stay on top of our ever increasing national debt.
I'm not an Economist, but common sense tells me that as long as we continue to ignore our Natural Resources and not use them to their full potential, we will continue to be a country that is always in debt.
First world status is very, very far from becoming reality in our future.

Yes sunshyne i know its more than envy and backbiting is keeping us back thats why i said ideas from people are bought foward and mostly knocked down because of politics and other frivilous reasons, you mentioned natural resources so why is it that we dont use them? Hmm but you know what a great number of bahamians are blinded by politics so thats another big reason. Like little children in the school yard politicians go around bragging what they did but did we not elect and pay our tax dollars for them to do a job for us?

No, we have a mile and a day to travel to that status. We have yet to even face certain facts and harsh reality's.We are an import nation that only really has service to offer but we offer downright shoddy service if you can call it that for the most part. We have a population that seems to be getting dummer than smarter. We have a population that seems to be to lazy to take avantage of the oppertunitys offered. We have a population that are basicly BEGGERS as they seem to want everything given to them. How on earth are we supposed to get to first world status with a mindset like that, only god knows and i am sure he is a bit stumped as well!

I will not even get into the political side of the matter as we are a nation that seems to reward those among us that actully hurt us the most, crooked politrickans!

I prefer the term "Developed Nation"

The Bahamas won't get to developed nation status without a plan.

Trinidad and Tobago spent 4 years coming up with a comprehensive plan to get to that level. It dealt with every aspect of the society including crime, the justice system, education, immigration, health, Public service reform, infrastructure and economic diversification development. They have engaged every citizen in making it happen. The "date" they set for themselves is 2020.

They call it VISION 2020.

Yes, they have many problems in T&T, but they are committed to Vision 2020.

The Bahamas has no plan. Those flowery picture books the political parties call "Manifestos" are a nursery school reading.

Change can't happen in the Bahamas until we demand change.

Fish and limestone,that is it!

Sand, silica, Fisheries, huge potential agricultural resources. You can't farm everywhere in the Bahamas, but some of our islands are dirt gold mines.

Did you know that Andros is home to over 50 species of rare plants found NO WHERE else in the world? Andros is also the largest untouched subtropical forest left in this part of world. The medicinal and pharmaceutical potential in the forest of Andros demand we protect it for careful exploration and the good of humankind!

Heck just our proximity to the US and Canada alone, makes us attract as a huge port drop for trade/shipment with China, Central/South America and North America. That port in Freeport is just a drop in the bucket!

And the day that we are wise enough to take advantage of what you have said Sunny is the day the Nation will rejoyce. Look at the freeport port, the union gave those people such a hard time they have moved to the Dominican Republic, we are not the brightest bulb on the tree and keep shooting ourselves in the foot! We are our own worst enemy that is for sure!

we're only a 3rd world country, because of too many 3rd world attitudes. Other than that we are developing.

It's really to annoying to even begin to post a comment in this regard. When one looks at the enormous potential in that little country and see how it is squandered everyday it's just sad.

we can take a page from Barbados when our politicians stop trying to act like they smarter than anybody from other caribbean nations. No need to reinvent the wheel, Barbados is light years ahead of us in terms of the development of its' citizens.

All our politicians can do is talk about 3rd highest per capita income in the region but that don't mean jack when it's really based on those wealthy individuals in Lyford Cay and others whose money are taken into account.

I just thought people were more important than money, my bad.

Where you been my brother, money is the shizzil and ta hellwit everything else. This country is headed down the tubes if nothing changes, we do not have the luxury of being complacent any longer as it is basicly now or never. Probably never!
