View Full Version : Stereotypes
Teniel 10-24-07, - 09:29 AM I am of the opinion, that there is always some level of truth to some stereotypes. Some are absurd generated by a delusional mindset, while others are not completely far fetched in their generalization of particular group. I also believe that stereotypes are not categorically negative things, and that their are some stereotypes that all of us respond favourably to. What are your thoughts on stereotypes?

Stereotypes are a way to describe a group of people we don't really know that well - nor taken the trouble to know that well.:)
wide eye 10-24-07, - 09:37 AM Stereotypes are a fact of life but can be very dangerous as you might think you have a person pegged but in reality you have no clue. As the old saying goes "don't judge a book by it's cover"!

True. At the very least most stereotypes are superficial in their assessment of a group, but are they always categorically false?
Here some common stereotypes:
Black men have huge genitalia
Oriental people are studious and bright
Bahamians are passive
Jamaicans are aggressive
All of us here will have our own perceptions of these stereotypes and respond either favourably or negatively, depending on whether we are in the target group.
Now which of these stereotypes are categorically false on a generalized basis?

Well that is the thing, stereotypes are used to judge the individual, and that is where the misstep goes.
It would be wrong of me to assume that a Muslim man was a terrorist just because he is Muslim. At the same time, I cannot deny the fact that allot of terrorists are Muslim.

as for black men and sensationalism- i kicked it with this dude who had to be 6'5 and buddy looked and felt like every bit of 6'5 millimeters...i saw him a few months ago and i quietly smirked to myself- what a waste of 2 minutes. ;) I remember being so disgusted...even with that said the white one still holds up!

I think they are all false.
The whole idea of stereotypes it to sum up a given group with out really thinking to much about it. Any of the above might apply to any given population.
All we can really do it to take an average and look at it. For example "Bahamians are passive." A test could be done to determine passivity. If the average Bahamas was passive we could only say that the average was. But within the population you would find aggressive, passive and dead passive. So you could not classify every Bahamian as passive = a stereotype.

The Exotic One 10-24-07, - 11:01 AM Stereotypes are never true... Unfortunately humans use them all the time in their professional and personal lives...
Women we are notorious for this... eg.. ALL MEN ARE DOGS... We usually come to this conclusion after dating just one bad person... :cutie:
Let's all just pledge to try to stop using them... When u see your thought process going there, try to change the thought!!!:bouncy:
YorickBrown 10-24-07, - 11:12 AM ALL MEN ARE DOGS...
I resemble that statement.
That is true. Some of us are just more "trainable" than others. :shhh:
