Remember Stephen Burrows? The boy who was charged with Veronica Smith's murder last August. He was freed on $30,000 bail yesterday, according to The Guardian. He confessed to killing Smith after police found her body stuffed in a garbage container that had been dumped in a mangrove swamp at Adelaide.
Now I have no problem with accused people getting bail but I think the bail bond should reflect the gravity of the crime. Sometimes I wonder what these judges are thinking. When that woman who beat her husbnad to death in his sleep got $5000 (no I didn't leave of a zero) bail I was appalled. What message does this send to the public? That murder is a minor crime?

This is an outrage... That is why murders are out on bail only to kill again... The man who shot the female security officer in the face is a prime example.. Our laws need to really be revisited....

I think it sends the message that our legal system is in a mess. Bail should not have been applied in this situation. I do not think that the crime rate in this country will decrease until we start hanging and beating with the cat!

The reality of the matter is, until our judicial system is able to bring these accused persons before the court in timely manner, or amend the Bail Act to make it more difficult for these persons to make bail, being released on bail will always be the next option.
Remember, these persons are "alleged" and are seen "to be innocent" of these crimes, until they have been proven guilty by a court of law.
JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED! for both the victims and the accused persons.

Once a murderer, always a murderer. Think of it: a man kills another, goes to prison to await trial (possible life inprisonment), recieves bail while case is pending, is released and conducts the cycle all over again (another possible life inprisonment). ONE LIFE INPRISONMENT + ONE LIFE INPRISONMENT = ONE LIFE INPRISONMENT (not two). So hey, what do THEY have to lose?

battered wife syndrome?
I think she was in an abusive relationship but $5000 bail is still too low.

I know it has to do mostly because of the backlog in court cases and the fact that EVERYONE (even the accused) is entitled to fair treatment...but this is what sickens me...no wonder why murderers are becoming so brazen..for peet's sake MURDER NUMBER 62 PEOPLE...sad to say this year will be in the 80's or 90's...in a few months they're back on the streets again...planning their next move!

the sad part is this man didnt post bail. he had some one do it for him. some family member put their house on the line so he could get bail.
of he admitted to killing her then bail should be denied. also how they figure 30k. if it was granted it should have been no less then 500,000
i believe presently there are over 100 accussed murderers walking the streets of nassau.
thats just the murderers. think about the thiefs, rapist etc.
no wonder crime is out of control.
the gov of the bahamas has to take control and say "hey, the bail act is suspended until further notice."
temporarly hire and bring in judges from other countries with similiar laws to clear the system.
every person on death row who have exuasted their appeals should be put to death. people like that crazy free port man who want to die, they should hang him and call that a day.
i know it sounds crazy to suggest that a gov ignores a person right to bail but its better they do it this way now versus becoming like jamaica later.
the crime is so out of control in jamiaca police are executing "bad boys" just so the cops and the court dont have to deal with them.
all those people talking bout they are christians in the bahamas. no matter what faith or belief they need to rally in the square and pray
