View Full Version : No More Swamp House in the Bahamas!
Sunnyjohn 11-02-07, - 02:29 PM As the threat of Tropical Storm Noel continued to loom over parts of The Bahamas and residents in low-lying areas did their best to keep waters from seeping into their homes, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham announced that the government would introduce a new Town Planning Act that would restrict the construction of homes and businesses in low-lying areas, hopefully by the end of the year.
Addressing the media at a mid-morning press conference Thursday, Ingraham said while there was no solution to totally prevent flooding in low-lying areas, the government would not continue to allow persons, especially those living in the capital, to build homes, businesses and sub-divisions in areas prone to flooding.
"If you notice, this is happening all over this island — low-lying areas with buildings built on them," the prime minister said. "That also impacts upon the question of flooding. The filling in of wetlands is a thing that has to come to an end. It has to stop."...

We already have laws on the books that addresses these problems, what we really need is the enforcement of the laws without favor.
The family Islands were advised when local government came that they needed to develope plans for their communities that would address each islands peculiar problems. For the most part they felt the advisers were trying to stop them from doing what they wanted. The politicians including the current PM told them to ignore the advice and viola you have the problems that these islands are facing now (Long Island flooding).
I'll tell you something else we like to talk about the haitian slum in Abaco, being a fire hazard, a bigger fire hazard is Marsh Habour itself. If they ever have a real fire there most of that town will burn down.
chancellor 11-02-07, - 03:50 PM With rising water levels, would such a law really matter?
With the prices, it seems as if the low lying areas are the only places to build now.
If you ask me, whole islands must be protected, because if you really want to prohibit building in such areas you probably would not build much anywhere else but the shoreline which many fear to live now.
One word comes to mind about fixing this whole situation......Holland.
