Despite all the criticism I've read on this site relative to the BEC, I would like to be the first to extend a sincere congratulation and vote of thank you to the hard working line staff that toil night after night to restore power to the islands affected by the wrath of hurricane Frances. Despite all the negatives that are usually said about the workers at the corporation, they displayed true professionalism especially in the island of Nassau where I saw them working all hours of the night trying restore and cleanup the mess and help bring our lives back to normalcy. So let me be the first to say thank you to the hard working men and women of The Bahamas Electricity Corporation that toiled after Frances.

I agree! And I heard they were short staffed
Well done BEC and also Batelco staff
YEs with the number of staff they had they did a great job.
I spoke with the linesman that did the work to my area on wednesday night and he said he was one of the few that they have, they dont have enough linesmen, he was even out driving earlier that day just himself and an office clerk was driving the truck thats how much staff they have! HE said they were doing 12 hour shifts and had a cut off time, otherwise they could have gotten more on quicker, but then ofcourse they need the rest also after 12 hours. They were also told to go other places when they were already in a set area so that hampered time running around the island from one place to the next or starting one area then being told to leave and take care of another area.
Another thing I was told was to no surprise the main electric equipent is out of date or simply no good with no good back up. Not relevant to the Hurricane but was just chatting about other black outs.
ALSO, if inconsideragte people would cut there trees before they grow up into full grown trees and take over power lines, then there would be less issues during hurricane season. BEC can only cut back the bush from around the lines, the owners need to meet with them at other times of the year to turn off power and cut down or move their trees which are clearly the major problem during hurricanes.
So to end I put all blame on our long black out time after this small hurricane in NASSAU, on the shoulders of those inconsiderate owners of property who will not cut their trees back or move them from around power lines/transformers, they were the ones that caused me and many many many others to be without power for so many days; they should fined or at least and they should know that so many of us know who you are and will show you the same respect that we were given!
BEC did what they could in the given situation.
I forgot, the COPs were also out doing a good job catching looters, and though I dont have a land line here, I heard Batelco did a good job, and Cable Bahamas was out in full force, not sure about water as I have a well.
The traffic lights though, whats up with that? Do they only have 1 person working on them??

[FONT=Arial]Hey Rory we need to find out who is responsible for the traffic lights. One time ago on a popular radio talk show I heard that the former PM had instructed the MOW to give the contract for those lights to a certain then top cabinet minister's son-in-law, now I understand that politics is being played again and this administration is not cooperating with the contractor, thus the reason for so many lights being malfunction. Before hurricane Frances numerous of those were out. PLease get the one in my area fix. Balliou Hill and Cowpen.

My sister was talking to me about a guy from the US who BEC brought to do some work, I cant recall if it was either because BEC was short staffed or if the people werent qualified to do the job. ( this was well before the hurricane)The govt of the Bahamas paid this guy's house bills and some other stuff.
