View Full Version : Poppies!
I am glad to see the announcers on ZNS-TV wearing Poppies. For a long time we have seen BBC and CBC announcers with them. Do you wear one at this time of year? (Remembrance day.)
For those that have no idea what I am talking about, check this site http://www.show.me.uk/site/news/STO521.html
androsann 11-08-07, - 09:38 PM I always wear my poppy with pride every year. The wild Flanders poppy is, in fact, my favourite flower and I have a vase of silk ones in my house. I feel it is only right, for a few days a year to remember all those who paid the ultimate price for us all to be able to live how we do today.
Sadly, to many Bahamians, especially these days it has no meaning and they have little or no understanding of what Poppy Day or Rememberance Sunday (if you want to be proper) is all about. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is always worth remembering in my book.
bahamiangoddess 11-08-07, - 09:58 PM When I was in school we use to pay .10 cents for them and wear them in our hair. Back they I had no idea why, I just would buy them.
gullyrock 11-09-07, - 08:38 AM We always bought and wore them when I was at school. They were offered when my son was in first or second grade, but I haven't seen them since. Sad! I remember a lady who would make a beautiful corsage with a poppy, wild fern and ribbon! She wore them every year. My grandmother died on "Poppy Day."

It is a shame that the tradition is not as strong as it used to be but I guess all the old soldiers are dying off very quickly.
When I was young, no one left the house this time of year without their poppy. There were old solders selling them down town at almost every corner. You bought another from them even if you had one already - they needed the money. More so today I guess.
If anyone sees poppies for sale buy one or two. They are in a few stores here in Nassau.
I remember my Grammy use to take us out to the service at the Gardens down town, where the Veterans from WWI & WWII would turn out and lay a ref. People don't realize there were many Bahamians who fought in those wars. God bless em.

That is so true... We just don't realize actually how many there were... I know my grammie (god rest her soul) had an older brother that fought in WWII and he never came back... Her mom told her about him, because being the youngest of 10 by the time she came around he had already died in the war!!!
Our children don't even know the significance of this... Can we blame some of this on the teachers, the fact that our schools are over run with foreign teachers that do not take an interest in our culture? I know back in the day our teachers kept us abreast of everything happening in this Bahamas! Then again back in the day we actually had teachers that had an interest in this culture!!!! :cutie:

We forget our heros too fast. Do you know that in some parts of Europe fresh flowers are laid on the graves of the fallen every day since World War I and II? Every school kid past the age of five can tell you more about World War II than all of us put together. The reason is they learn it in school. They know all the battles and the generals, all the heros.
Many Bahamians went to war. Some were killed. Can we name even a handful?
Ever see the movie "Saving Private Ryan?" Movies generally don't do a good job of showing the horrors of war. That movie came close, very close. The only thing missing was the smell of gunpowder, and burning flesh.
The opening scene where they landed on the Beach was powerful! Men being blown apart, the chatter of machine gun fire, the distinct sound of a bullet passing near you - which is good. You don't here the one that gets you, the cries of the wounded, the confusion. When I watch that I wonder how people could muster up the courage to do that - and in the Pacific - over and over! How could they do that without going nuts?!?! Anyone who did that is a hero in my books. I'll wear a poppy for those heros any day. If you have not seen the movie get a copy or watch out for it on TV. Worth a history lesson.
Four clips from that part of the movie.

We bought them for 1 dollars at my kid's school and they wear them all day. They were told what it is for, they do it every year.
