View Full Version : Bahamian Royalty
1bigfrog 11-19-07, - 07:40 PM The other day I was arguing with a friend on whether there exist such a thing as 'Bahamian Royalty.' Well of course, there exist no such thing as a "Royal family" in the Bahamas, however, he cited that like the US, we have ''prestigious familys" similar to the Kennedys and Rockafellas of the United States. Ya boy cited families like the Symonnettes, the Bethels, the Dupuchs, the Pindlings, the Maynards and even the Dillards. He claims that in order to be a Bahamian Royalty, ones family must be small, have huge amount of cash, property of business and involved in a number a civic works/social type work. He also claimed that ones name itself should evoke, talk and querries. For example if a stranger comes into a room, and say, I am 'Sam Pindling', his name suppose to spark conversation as to who he is and where he came from, and a certain amount of respect is associated with it...
Personally, I think this entire idea of Royal families is a bunch of crock...but I said, what the heck, I ga bring it to BI to see what they think...Is there such a thing as Bahamian royalty and who they is?

...everyone know how I feel about the Pindlings so ill leave it at that...
...it took time for the mellon's carnegie, astor's, forbe's, du pont's, and whoever else to make a name for themselves, and secure the future of these trust fund baby heirs (all in the midst sans anti-trust legislation mind)
...with that said, ours is a country whose relatively youthful so making a name for oneself and securing wealth is is yet still do able for those who want to leave a lasting impression of community and leaving a legacy for their children's grand children to build upon...

canewry 11-20-07, - 11:37 AM Would the McSweenys and the Fitzgeralds be considered Bahamian Royalties...Or even the Bostwicks...But then again they have so many different Bostwicks, they may not fit the criteria.

So if we dont call such people bahamian royalty then what do we recognise this as ? there is recognition of the name but also there is some admiration or respect for the contributions members of that family may have made to society coupled with possibly having alot of money. People do look at you in awe when you say your name and your surname happens to be one of those mentioned in this thread. It may not be royalty but it is something .

I wonder if the Newry family is Royalty.
We are a small family and we have made some impact on the Bahamas.
But then again, we may not be rich enough.

Naw. Yinna Newry's went and link yaseff to Haiti. You know that's Bahamian no-no number one- "Thou shalt cast aspersions on all things Haitian."
(Even though Haiti may end up saving our hip one day soon.)
