"A recent 12-year study that investigated the relationship between fitness, weight and death in Americans over the age of 60 shows that physical activity prolongs life regardless of body fat.

Previous studies have shown that both factors, the amount of body fat and the level of cardiovascular activity are connected with healthier older Americans. This is the first study that shows that cardiovascular fitness helps adults over 60 live longer, regardless their body fat.

The University of South Carolina study was published in the Journal of the American Medicine Association.

This is good news for almost one third of the Americans who are obese. As they fear that their health is in danger because they cannot shed the fat, everyday walking for at least half an hour or engaging in physical but recreational activities like golf, dance classes or swimming might do the trick.

The study was conducted on 2,603 people over the age of 60 from the United States. They were followed for a period of 12 years with medical checks, fitness tests and fat levels measurements. Although it had been thought that the level of fat would give a strong link to the mortality among study volunteers, actually being unfit was the major factor that raised the death risk.

Professor Steven Blair from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, who led the study said that "certainly obesity is a public health problem but...so much attention gets focused on it that people think it is the be-all and end-all and that's not true."

soo.... exercis is good for you! (*Shock and awe sounds in audience*):)
I'm not knocking you for posting it, CG, it's important to post this stuff. Sometimes the obviousness of some research amazes me though.
I'm gonna post some research results about veganism when I get to it.
BTW, I was meaning to ask you, since you are a buddhist, do you practice the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle?

The big thing there was "physical activity prolongs life regardless of body fat."

No I don't follow a vegetarian lifestyle. I like veggies and eat them often but I like meat too. :)

Hello, I am 15 years old and I am overweight. I am also a selective eater. I would like a strict Specific day by day diet plan that will help me loose weight and keep it off. I do workout everyday. Does anyone know a diet plan, or a website that I can go to make a diet plan specifically for me? I don’t care if it is an adult’s diet plan. Even if there is something I do not like I will try to eat it because I really want to loose weight. Please help. I am sick of being like this and hating myself for it.

You shouldn't diet.

To lose weight you have to change your lifestyle. Dieting is temporary. A lifestyle change has a little more permanence.

As long as you burn more calories than you eat, you should be okay. But you need reserve calories because your body needs energy to function while you sleep. For example if you eat 2,500 calories a day, you should burn close to 1,800 to 2,000 calories. If you do workout, add a little more weight training, muscle burns fat more than dieting.

If you are otherwise healthy, getting at least 30 min of moderate intensity cardio a day is also very helpful in improving your heart and in shedding fat.

Speaking of which, there was a public TV program along these lines,a couple dozen ordinary people trained to run in the last Boston Marathon. They were medically monitored and believe it or not a very solid woman in her 30's not only showed the most cardio-vascular improvement, but had the most stamina of the group easily finishing the grueling course. Many very fit looking people did not finish.:)

If you are trying to bulk up then, what is best would be a 4 day split. where you work 1 muscle group a day, chest, legs, back, arms/shoulders the reason one would do a 4 day split is because muscles require time to heal themselves, and by training them everyday you are not letting them grow. if you are just trying to tone up then you might want to hit a group twice in a week .

I watched that special, it was very good, informative. I learned that running distance doesnt necessarily aid in losing weight(I kind of new that because it had not been working for me, I couldnt understand why), they gave medical reason why so now I added weight bearing activities.

First thing, is to stop hating yourself. Second is to get moving. My suggestion is at least 30 mins a day every other day or 4 times a week. second change your eating habits. Eliminate or decrease junk food. DIETS DO NOT WORK. Find healthy favorites that you can fill up own, You can never really go wrong with fruits and veggies. Skinless chicken breast, seafood, low fat meats, not fried. Without knowing your workout I assume it's at least five times a week of cardio and weight training. At 15 saying you are in the prime of your life is an understatement. If you were my sister I would suggest a lifestyle change first.

So I would recommend that you become a triathlete like myself and set a goal to compete in the annual Conchman Triathlon in Freeport the first week of November. The race is a 3/4 mile swim, about a 20 mile bike and three mile run. In order for you to train for this race that kids half your age compete in you will have to have proper nutrition but at the same time it's fun and in a year you will have something tangible to hold on to like your finishing medal. There are many beginner triathlon programs on line so look them up.

Here is my diet because you asked for a sample;

Breakfast 7:00am
organic oatmeal (put bananas in it)
Avacado
two eggs
cranberry juice (make sure it has Vit c not just sugar)
(this takes me less than five minutes to make)

Brunch 10:00am
Whole Grain cereal and low fat milk rich with 5grams of protein
add strawberries
Plus whatever LOCAL fruit is in season..
(this takes a minute to make)

LUNCH 1:00PM
SALAD AND PROTEIN

The protein could be chicken, beef, lamb, fish

or
Sweet potato, spinach, and almonds (this builds up your red blood cells which you need to store oxygen for your aerobic workouts so eat on the day before your longer run workouts) BUT MAKE SURE YOU EAT THIS WITH WATER OR YOU WILL GET A HEADACHE you should be drinking a liter a day anyway

OR
Tuna with whole grain bread or pita

or
spinach pasta with pestos sauce and shrimp

dinner
ELIMINATE WHITE RICE AND SWITCH TO BROWN RICE...
Salad, corn, carrots, (go for color here; red yellow, green, purple)
Protein.. fish, chicken, lamb, pork

You can switch this up throuout the week. As you can see eating right takes a lot of work and ain't cheap which is why KFC and Dirties makes tons of money...but you want to do the right thing.

By the way you have to have a post workout meal or shake or you won't recover for the next workout which is important...your lunch will suffice but if you can't do that then try a peanut butter, soy milk, and banana shake..yummy.

By the way if you notice I slipped in the five servingS of fruit and vegeatble in this menu and that's going to keep you sharp..fruit is my sugar, almonds and nuts are my salt and fat, and vegetables fill up my plate.

Good Luck!
