Dear Friends,

WE NEED YOUR HELP…………TIME IS RUNNING OUT.

A number of people have been very concerned for some time about the Bimini Bay Resort and Casino’s impact on the tiny island of Bimini. The project is massive and if allowed to proceed to completion to include the planned 18 hole golf course, we feel the Bimini we all know and love, with it’s crystal clear water, abundant marine life, friendly people and laid back lifestyle will be lost forever. For a recap of recent happenings, please take a few moments to view this compelling video.

Also, please know that we are not against the development per se. There is certainly nothing to gain - and a lot to lose - by attempting to “shut it down.” Instead, we propose that future building / expansion be limited to the huge amount of land already manufactured by the developer from dredge effluent. We feel that the vital mangrove wetlands to the north and east of the project should be left untouched. So eco-sensitive and vital to the survival of marine life is this area, it has long been designated – by the Bahamian Government - as the Number One Priority in all of the Bahamas’ 700+ islands for preservation. Why this Marine Protected Area is still not officially recognized and the area covered by it is now destined to become an 18-hole golf course, is anyone’s guess.

It is our feeling that it is not too late to preserve what remains of Bimini. The developer has deep pockets and has in place a far reaching public relations media campaign touting the benefits of his completed project. Although the “other side of the story” has received a good deal of press the developer marches on, seemingly unstoppable. An opportunity to draw more government and international attention to Bimini’s plight has recently presented itself. A well known filmmaker spent time last week in Bimini taking an in depth look at the Bimini Bay project and the impact it’s having on the island and its environs. We’re hoping to take advantage of his footage, his talent and his interest in preserving our oceans and vital marine habitats. Doing so, however, could be expensive.

Thus far, efforts to “save Bimini” have cost concerned individuals mostly their time and expertise. A great deal of information has been disseminated over the years, raising awareness of the issue both on island and beyond. Not too long after an informative flier was circulated last summer, the Government of the Bahamas sent a task force to Bimini for a first hand look at the project. Not too long after that visit, Bimini Bay was ordered to stop dredging for at least sixty days while the many complaints and concerns spawned by the development are investigated. The resort will be told in January whether or not they can proceed and, if allowed to continue construction and excavation, what they can do. We would like to take advantage of this reassessment period to accelerate our awareness campaign. We feel our best shot at present is through a short video clip, which can be widely circulated. Obviously this will incur costs.

For the first time since our inception, we find it necessary to solicit donations. Pretty bad timing, we admit, with the Holidays fast approaching, but we really need to act before the January decision is made. You can learn more about the cause by visiting our website at www.SaveBimini.org. Should you feel you can contribute either now or in the future, please do so by clicking on the DONATE link.

Please know that every dollar given will be much appreciated and will go directly toward helping preserve Bimini. Also please know there may be duplications on our email list. If you’re affected, please contact us so we can remedy the situation. If you think an interested party may not be on our list and would like information, please email us their address and we will add it to our list.

Many thanks,

Looks like another scam the government got you Biminites into. Like the one off Abaco and Rum Cay.

If your small community is so hell bent on saving it, take the local money given by Chalks Airline, stop the development and do it "Your Way"

Hi...yes, Biminis are too small for such a development. I think that this project is the biggest mistake of Bahamian Government.

Just to correct you: Save Bimini is not just a small community group. A lot of people, organizations such as Mangrove Action Project, Shark Trust, Global Response and others support the idea of creation of Marine Protected Area for Bimini and halt Bimini Bay project in this phase.

I've been personally working on this issue for 3 years. So if you have any questions regarding this please feel free to email me on savebimini@gmail.com or just ask here.

Please see www.restrictbiminibayresort.com website. In "In the press" section you can see the list of Quotes, Articles, Websites, Journals & Other Information about Bimini Bay Resort & Casino

Are you Bahamian? We have a similar problem here in Abaco,a few Bahamians are against the Baker's Bay project on Guana Cay "me among them" and most Abaconians want the project, because of the jobs it has produced thus far and the residual jobs servicing the resort.I have no problem wit that and altho,I feel such a huge developement will harm our reef,I will bow to the wishes of the majority.I do have HUGE problem wit foreignors, especially do-gooder Americans sticking their noses in issues regulating the welfare of working Bahamians. Bimini is a poor area,I mean dirt poor. The wiseguy drug dealers in their cigarette boats racing in and out of the harbour all day and night are the only Bahamians wit any cash.If this is a grass-roots Bimini- Bahamian effort to stop this,I applaud it.If it is an effort to stop the people of Bimini from having acess to work because some American interests do not want it,I oppose it

No I am not a Bahamian neither American. I come from Europe (the Slovak Republic). I know very well about the Guana Cay issue, SGCR etc. To be honest I am also interested in the solution of this problem, so I am watching this issue. What's the situation in Guana Cay right now. I've heard that PM did a tour to your island and expressed the full support for Baker's Bay Development. I am so disgusted by Bahamian government. I think that FNM is not so different than PLP as I'd expected. It's almost the same since there's is an ignorance from the side of government to the threat of new developments for islands. Bahamas which presents itself as environmental aware country and conservative towards natural resources are selling your land and sea to foreign investors what usually turns into destruction of your pristine habitats. This will not improve the economy, business of country neither the employment. It's quite the opposite. Such developments will bring lots of problems and irreplaceable damages. The price of development is pretty high - destruction! Recently my article about the "trashing" of Bimini Bay on island and impacts of this project on the environment was published in the Tribune where I explained and pointed out how "environmentally friendly" Bimini Bay Resort is to island.

No doubts that Baker's Bay will harm the coral reefs around the island. All the artificial fertilizers and chemicals used for the building of golf course will cause such big damages to the environment. It will be the same for Bimini where the golf course will certainly cause the environmental disaster. I am serious. Jobs? In Bmini, most of workers are Dominicans, Mexicans, Cubans, Americans and Bahamians but from other islands not from Bimini.

The Bimini Bay resort is huge for such a small island. It occupies two thirds of North Islands. I think that we can expect more foreign people than locals. This will of course affect the local business, culture and degradation of natural resources will occur, too.

Qualified workers frum Bimini have to be offered the jobs first. That is our national policy. The problem of course is that there are not many peeps on Bimini in the first place, never mind ones qualified for construction on this scale.I wish hear the views of the people of Bimini,it is a poor Cay,it is their Cay.

I personally had lots of talks with Bimintes about this issue. I tried to spent time in their presence and find out their own attitude, opinions about the Bimini Bay Resort and I gained many interesting information and the real picture of their thinking. I can tell you that most of Biminites disagree with the development Bimini Bay and they don't want developer Gerardo Capo continue in the destruction of the island. Unfortunately, they are being ignored by government, nobody listens to them, to their wishes. Also there are some people who don't know the cruel reality and even don't know what's going on in the area of Bimini Bay Resort. They are totally uninformed! I think Biminites were quite grateful for my activities which included also the education of these people about the importnace of marine ecosystems and about the Bimini Bay Resort etc. I spotted the interest from their side. Some locals still believe to government and claim that government will not allow the further construction of hotels, casinos and golf course...and of course there are few locals who don't mind the development and support it because they are being paid off. That's understandable.
Look at these videos - such big lies with liers in it. It's so disgusting, especially the part like this one where the guy says: "We don't want to destroy everything like everybody thinks....of course when you do any construction you need to cut some trees." They also don't forget to mention all good things they have done for Bimini community - painting of houses, education, tennis court, basketball court. ...."this is Bimini Bay for Bimini". Everything is so perfect. It's so ridiculous to watch these videos. Smiley President of Bimini Bay Resort Sean Grimberg will make you sick.

Poor Bimini.
Between that and the proposed LNG, might as well just nuke the environment.
Shame on the PLP and the FNM for letting this project go in in Bimini!
If someone starts an petition I'll do my best to get a bunch of people to sign it.
Also, to the person who started this thread, contact Re-earth, they're the local experts on protesting against bad government environment policies.

Yes, poor Bimini but we can still do something to change the fate of this island. I am pretty sure...however, it needs more people involved in it, I would say that the best would be to have Bahamians because as I already mentioned above there's lots of people around the world who protest against Bimini Bay Resort via their attitudes. Be also aware that many efforts have been already made towards stopping of this development. One of them were also the petitions. I personally ran the campaign at my place and gathered about 1000 signatures. Online petition is also available but I think that it's better to have a paper-written petition. When I was in Bimini past summer I walked in Alice Town and other parts of North Bimini and got some signatures for my last petition. If you want I can resend this petition to you so you can ask people around you to sign it. The main purpose of my petition wasn't to get the most of signatures but to talk to Biminites. It was worth doing it because they became aware of the senseless development ongoing on their island. I just felt the need to tell them how this project will affect the fishing industry, fish stocks, their living and so on. I am planning to write an informal letter for PM and enclose also my petitions so it would be great if I can have more with your help. If you are really willing to do it, let me know and I'll give you more of my ideas. I'd really like to cooperate with native people - Bahamians. Do you have any contact on Re-earth in the Bahamas? I think they know about this but I might be wrong...I am really looking forward to hearing from you again.

If you want to see some pictures of Bimini Bay, destruction of mangroves, Bimini Bay dump area and so on go on my web album: http://picasaweb.google.com/mangroves.jr

exactly...why upset these people way of life to suit they 200 a week bed-making economics posts...these people were fine---all they wanted the govt to do was provide basic neccessities to them like bring them their mail on time!
