Bahamian Team Uniforms, Trophies Stolen During Central Florida Trip
OCOEE, Fla. -- A Bahamian high school basketball team visiting Central Florida for the first time to play in several tournaments had all of its uniforms, trophies and money stolen, according to police.
Investigators said the team of 13 players from the Bahamas was visiting the West Oaks Mall in Ocoee when someone stole their rental van and drove off with their possessions.
The team's luggage, money, uniforms and several trophies were taken, police said.
"People don't care about other people anymore," Oakridge High School Athletic Director Red Johnston said. "There's no conscience in young people today. You know, (they) just go out there and steal from other people."
The visiting players are underprivileged and worked hard to raise the money for the trip to Florida, Local 6 reported.
"It kind of ruins your faith in society," Johnston said.
The team is heading back to the Bahamas without their items, Local 6's Charnel Wright reported.
Police have few leads in the case.
Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
