Thanks to over $9,000 in donations the Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Fund was able to hand out fifteen (15) Building Gift Vouchers on Friday. Each recipient received a $500 gift voucher from Kelly’s Freeport limited for building supplies. “We are thrilled today to immediately issue these vouchers out,” stated Sarah Kirkby, Committee Chairman, "we started our efforts only three weeks ago and thanks to concerned local and corporate citizens we are helping today!”

The Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Fund, of the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association, was started after local Attorney and Human Rights President Fred Smith realized that the Government seemed to be taking too long to help individuals in need. “Today we are helping Ms. Zeta Jones of Hunters. She has seven children living in their three room house which has gaping holes in the roof. It’s disgusting that she has not been helped sooner, but today I am proud to say that our fund can.”

Mrs. Jones is only one of hundreds who are still in desperate need in Grand Bahama. She noted that “each time it rains, we have to move everything and clean up again. It’s so hard, I am heading to Kelly’s today to get this roof fixed.” Surrounded by her kids and extended family it was hard not too be touched by the need of this family.

Mrs. Kirkby, who became quite emotional after seeing the surrounding area where the family lived, noted that “any mother would be divested by coming here today, these beautiful children are playing in broken debris and thousands of pieces of glass that is surrounding the home. If this doesn’t make you want to help your fellow Bahamian, I don’t know what will.”

The Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Funds website is now online at www.grandbahamarelief.org, which gives an account of funds received and issued. “We want our site to show where and how we are spending our funds, just like we would like the Government of The Bahamas to let the people of Grand Bahama know what money is received out of their National Hurricane Fund – we want accountability.”

The Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Fund web site is hoping to encourage International help from individuals who know Grand Bahama well. “There are many visitors who don’t really understand what happened here, we need their assistance to get those most in need dry and for some back in their homes, ” added Mrs. Kirkby, “we are encouraging friends to send this website address to as many email addresses as they can. Once on the site they will see who we are helping and how they can assist.”
