This right there shows that even though Obama is the best man for the job, many of us still worry about racial issues to this day.

Obama isn't worried and neither should we.

It would be a shame that persons would not vote for Obama because of his race, even more so if it was due to a perception that he would not be able to get as much done as a caucasian would.

That's saying outright that only a white person would be effective as president.

Racial resistance will have to be faced at some point by everyone...even from their own. That should not stop anyone from doing their best and forging forward in life against all odds.

I would not support Obama if I were an American and the reason would not be about his skin color. It would be about his stance the social issues.

As a Bahamian would not support any democrat. They always seem to want to put us on a blacklist and dey never seem to have our back. They help put us on a blacklist in 2000 and now this Obama character just trying to make it to the White House and he already planning put us and other countries they perceive to be "tax havens" on a blacklist based on info. they either can't prove or info. that is outdated (i.e. our old financial services laws).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_haven

On 25 January 2007 Senator Byron Dorgan (for himself and on behalf of Carl Levin and Russ Feingold) presented a bill to the U.S. Senate to amend the U.S. Internal Revenue Code 1986 to treat controlled foreign corporations which are established in tax havens as domestic corporations, and subject to full taxation as such within the U.S.[27]

The proposed amendment would define the following countries as tax havens for the purposes of the legislation: Andorra, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Cyprus, Dominica,[28] Gibraltar, Grenada, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Maldives, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Monaco, Montserrat, Nauru, Netherlands Antilles, Niue, Panama, Samoa, San Marino, St. Kitts and Nevis,[29] St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Tongo, Turks and Caicos, and Vanuatu.

That draft legislation was superseded by the unambiguously named Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act which was introduced by Senator Levin together with Presidential candidate Barack Obama and Senator Norm Coleman.[30] The Act would introduce a large number of measures designated to attack transactions perceived to facilitate unlawful tax avoidance by the use of offshore tax havens. Broadly same list of countries above was included in the earlier bill as designated tax havens, but with the addition of Aruba, Costa Rica, Sark and Alderney (which are treated, curiously, as sub-sets of Guernsey rather than independent jurisdicions), Hong Kong, Latvia, Luxembourg, Singapore, Switzerland and the removal of Andorra, Bahrain, Liberia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Montserrat, Niue, San Marino, Seychelles and Tongo.

Some of the measures highlighted include:

creating a presumption that an offshore company or offshore trust is controlled by the U.S. taxpayer who formed it.

empowering the U.S. Treasury to take special measures against foreign jurisdictions which "impede" U.S. tax enforcement.

requiring U.S. financial institutions that open accounts for foreign entities controlled by U.S. clients, or open accounts in offshore secrecy jurisdictions for U.S. clients, or establish entities offshore for U.S. clients, to report such actions to the IRS.

taxing income originating from offshore trusts used to buy real estate, artwork and jewelry for U.S. persons, and treating as trust beneficiaries those persons who actually receive offshore trust assets.

increasing current penalties on promoters of unlawful tax shelter.

prohibiting the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from issuing patents for "inventions designed to minimize, avoid, defer, or otherwise affect liability for Federal, State, local, or foreign tax".

requiring hedge funds and company formation agents to establish anti-money laundering programmes equivalent to those which apply to banks and other financial institutions.

Many of the intiatives appear politically populist rather than a serious attempt to curb tax mitigation schemes.[31] Other aspects of the legislation seem to be predicated on outdated stereotypes of tax havens, and assume that most tax havens continue to operate a culture of secrecy and with complete disregard for modern know-your-client requirements,[32] and bear little relationship to modern commercial practice.[33] The fact that the bill is expressed to designate four European Union countries (Cyprus, Latvia, Luxembourg and Malta) and three other leading global economies (Hong Kong, Singapore and Switzerland) automatically as non-cooperative tax havens might indicate the limited prospects of the bill becoming law in its current form.

Led by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity, various free-market groups, think tanks, and taxpayer organizations have encouraged the Bush Administration to reject legislation seeking to penalize low-tax jurisdictions.

Republicans (Mike Huckabee) all da way!!!

This is a concern regarding Obama, but this legislation appears to be attacking "unlawful tax avoidance" as supposed to what we in The Bahamas have amended to be completely legal and above board.

We should have no problem avoiding that blacklist because we were one of the first (and only) jurisdictions to comply completely and utterly to OECD standards. To pass that legislation they would have to prove that every single one of the jurisdictions listed is allowing such measures to take place unlawfully.

Then again, proper financial services personnel should have looked at this situation already. It is well-known worldwide that The Bahamas already has done what was needed to weed out the real tax evaders.

If Obama was Republican and shared Conservative values (added to his amazing speaking ability) he would be the Perfect President for 2008.....and beyond!

Unfortunatly, this is not the case!

I agree but Obama has already put us on his black list. What kind of a presidential candidate would do such a thing without making sure his info. was correct??

This was a bill against unlawful tax avoidance - given that offshore banking is a major industry, and our past track record we were mentioned. But then again this was a bill, unlikely to make into law according to the info. you posted. Hence nothing to worry about.

So true! But IMO it would be nice if America had a president who at least had a good command of the English language. And not another decider like dubbya!

What Obama say's he represents is change. Change can mean a whole lot of things. Change in clothes; change in tyre's; change in diet. What's "change" and what is he applying it to?

In fact, the word "change" can mean anything you want it to mean. Hillary is using "change" as well. But, what do they mean? Change for the better? Change for the worse?

In any event, when presented with this question, they all revert to "any change from president Bush", which at this stage in American political history, any change would be werlcomed.

So, change away!

Its offical OBAMA won the Iowa caucuses...His theme is change...
So i must ask all BI members the questions, who is the Bahamas' OBAMA? Who is the one person on the Bahamian political landscape who inspires the masses like Obama does and is doing in the US? Is that person on the Bahamas political scene now, if so, who?

OBAMA is wasting his time. Not only is OBAMA delusional but he is creating mass delusion among African American in America and now in the Bahamas.

The Bahamas does not need a messiah; what we need is political maturity and self discipline to being behaving like members of a mature nation and a people occupying nation that has earned its place in the First World as a mature Nation.

KL: Why do you think Obama is "creating mass delusion"? Also, I don't understand your statement "The Bahamas does not need a messiah".
Are you inferring that Bahamians are beginning to view Obama as some sort of political saviour?

Would much appreciate your clarification.
