The government just paid $480K to a local Copying & Xerox company to install Security Cameras at the airport... whats wrong with this picture!

Mind you most of us actually in the security industry wont do quotes for government, as they either take too long to pay, dont pay, or there are no rules on what industries can come and do a quote (not to mention the amount of foriegnors that came along with them). I saw plumbing companies, AC companies, etc quoting that airport job ... pathetic! (or moreso typically bahamian). They dont have to know what they are doing, just as long as they BS there way through it. In the end its us the tax payers that will pay for it to be done again!

Somehow, I knew you would be the one bringing this issue to light! I was going to ask if you quoted the job. You should test the system by trying to breach the security perimeter, just like the news people do in the US! A simple 'Rory was here' sign, inside the compound, at the head of the runway...

:D

Trust me, it isnt that hard. My brother used to work at the NIA and he told some stories of how lame the security is there (sleeping guards, etc) .. actually I did go on that quote, there were maybe 50 other companies, barely any security companies at that, loaded with foriegn distributors and sales people, and it was a 2 hour walk around the Airport grounds, they had no clue as to what they wanted, they had no prior designs, no CCTV consultants, nothing, they wanted everyone to come up with their own design - really ....??

Noone in their right mind would do that, so they can spend weeks designing the plan only for the NIA to use that design and give it to one of their friends.! I dont think many others went back or followed through, noone I know did and there were a few of them there (AC guys, Plumbers, etc).

I dont think they get it, CCTV Consulants work by the hour/job, they do the design for major jobs like this, then they give it to the installation/sales company which then quotes per the consulants specs. The consultant is not branded, in other words would suggest several well known brands, not just one. They will give exact specs on the job, etc. This is how it is done in the first world.

Doesn't the gov't have a procedure for requesting these sort of bids? Trust me, no gov't has true 'experts' in any given field. But there should be a process for an independent security consultant to write specifications, then the request for bids can be sent to those that are deemed appropriate vendors and contractors. Once the job is complete, the consultant verifies the installation meets his/her intended specs.

I do it all day long on the ships that I work with. It's easier than giving a carte blanche to underequipped, under experienced, and over priced companies. The potential financial savings are huge as well. Firstly, a well thought out plan can be evaluated for efficiency/compatibility, etc. Secondly, a well thought out plan doesn't have to be removed and replaced when it is discovered obsolete upon installation, modified when it doesn't satisfy all the requirements, or ignored because it is too cumbersome. I'm preaching to the choir on this, I know.
