View Full Version : Voice of the people
Vicky 11-07-04, - 01:58 PM I have a question
Is the voice of the people the voice of the Creator?
Or
The voice of the people is not the voice of the Creator?
I wish thses preachers would make up their minds.

It depends what the "voice" is saying. If it is going the way one wants then it is the voice of God. If it goes against the way one wants then it is not!

I think you are right! However, there is little real difference "is the voice" or as the voice."

Perhaps it was said by some politician who had just won an election!
Alexander Hamilton said, "The voice of the people has been said to be the voice of God; and, however generally this maxim has been quoted and believed, it is not true to fact. The people are turbulent and changing, they seldom judge or determine right." He and I share the same view! The good Mr. Hamilton died in 1804 so the saying has been around a while.
I like this one better. Samuel Butler said, "The voice of the Lord is the voice of common sense, which is shared by all that is."
Those were the only two quotes I could find on a quick search.

The preachers use these words all the time to condemn something or to support something.
It's as if as long as what is being said is what they want to hear then it’s the voice of the Creator. If it something they agree with then is the voice of the Creator.
If it’s against what the feel should be done/said then it’s not the voice of the Creator.

You are probably right.
I remember that sentence from school days. Some of my siblings attended the old government high school and I used to hear them quoting "Vox populi Vox Dei". On enquiring what they meant, they said it was Latin for "The voice of the people is the voice of God". The net confirms this. I always thought it was merely one of the sentences to help them in their studies of Latin!
Anyone remembers Dr Walker who used to be a member of the house of assembly long ago? I think that was also the motto of his tabloid newspaper.
I just heard the greatest political quote of all time! It is by my favorite Author - Anonymous.
"Politicians are like diapers they should be changed often - and for the same reason." :sarcastic

I have never heard a gay person say they werent born like this.
I heard the frase " The voice of the people is the voice of God" at the gay cruise protest in Rawson sq.

CG, there is one I heard some time ago, I believe you may have already heard it: Question: "How do you know when a politician is lying?" Answer: "When his mouth is moving!"

Sounds right to me.
drwfra 11-18-04, - 04:51 PM Hello everyone,
Interesting topic. Often it is refered to as "vox populi, vox dei". A story is told about 2 theologicans speaking on opposite ends of this subject. Whereas as one said, "Vox populi, IS vox Dei", the other replied, "yes, and they cried, Crucify Him! Crucify Him! On a serious note, I would concur with CG, that it really depends on what side that you are on. Unfortunately, this is really not the most objective way to see this, as many would think that the difference between a recession and a depression is : a recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose yours.
Then we might say that "the voice of the people" is just "the voice of the people". A school of thought suggests that "God chooses to limit His powers, in order to give us the power to choose." If one would accept this, then vox populi can be flawed, evil, or in error, correct, divine, or fair. It depends on the outcome.
Does this mean that The Almighty can't (or won't) work through human agency? Of course not, The Almighty (Supreme Being, God or however one chooses to make reference) can do whatever whenever with whomever He chooses.

lol, good one CG.
History proves that "The voice of the people is not the voice of the Creator",
otherwise we would not need a creator.
Humans are not infallable, we make mistakes.
How could our voice be the creators when we are constantly debating with one another. One side is always the voice and the other side is always not the voice.
and referring to religion/science/history does little to sway the opinions of others even if you can prove it is factual.
does the creator see the glass as half full or half empty?
