How is it possible that neighbors can be so inconsiderate as to have multiple dogs left out in their yard to bark all night long. Sleep deprevation is a serious health issue. After speaking with neighbors to no avail, is there a policy to deal with this issue?? Please let me know if there is an organization I can contact to help resolve this annoying situation. thank you

This should fall under, "disturbing the peace." Ask the Police about it. If that does no good call the Humane Society and ask them if they have any advice.

My sister is very much involved in laws regarding animals. I'll ask her when she gets back from vacation next week.

Yes, dogs are supposed to bark. But when they bark as equally at falling leaves as they do intruders they become no longer of value. Have you every heard of the story of the boy who cried wolf? Too many dogs bark so often that no one pays attention to any warning they might give. They just become noise makers.

Yes, you are right. I am not sure but I think it is something like four dogs. after that you need a kennel permit.

thanks to all for your input - I have had dogs and felt much safer with my dog in the house at night for protection as opposed to outside where someone can poison him. On the funny side, my neighbors dogs are sleeping all day, exhausted from their barking all night! :shaky:

dogs have stopped barking around here, now that most of the stray dogs and cats have been run down by cars in this area!

My sister has returned from her vacation and I put your question to her. As I suspected, this is a matter of disturbing the peace. The police should be called.

Also she cleared up some other points where I was wrong. It seems there is no limit to the amount of dogs one can own. A person can have fifty dogs if they like and they do not need a kennel licence.

My sister, and others, are trying to get legislation passed (right now, it is in the draft stage) that would limit the number of dogs a person can own without getting a kennel licence. They are also working on increasing the fine for nuisance dog owners. Right now, the fine is something like $20.00. That is not near enough of a fine for those who allow their dogs to become an annoyance.

As you can see, our laws regarding animals are antiquated to say the least. However, she did say that the law requires that all dogs have a valid dog licence affixed to their collars. I'll bet that the dogs that keep you awake at night are not licenced. This is also an offence.

Your next problem will be finding a police officer that takes these matters seriously enough to do something about it.

There is an organization in Nassau called Proud Paws. They seek to cut down on both the stray and owned dog population by providing a FREE spaying and neutering service. They operate totally from donated funds. Their phone number is 424-PAWS (424-7297) They are working towards ensuring all dogs are wanted dogs.

Anyone can call them and they will send the Proud Paws van to pick up pets - both dogs and cats. They take them to a veterinarian who spays/or neuters them, and if need be, cleans them up and de-fleas them and then returns the dogs to their owners. Sometimes they find new homes for dogs as well, although that is not the focus of their work.

If you are concerned about dogs barking and keeping you awake, why not donate some funds to this group that is working towards helping you sleep!

The Humane Society could also use your help. If money is an issue, you can save up your newspapers, and drop them off for kennel lining, instead of putting them in your garbage.
