View Full Version : Life was simpler when the Bahamas was Socialist
1bigfrog 01-22-08, - 11:46 AM I don't know what we is nah...but oh well...
I remember the rich gave generously back then.
The top students were educated by the state.
Educated Bahamians were duty bound to return home to contribute.
The majority of politicians/statements entered the political arena to make a difference.
Roads were paved on time and life was just simpler.
Less crime, less corrution.
Perhaps we should return to our socialist ways.

The bold and underlined points never happened.
"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."
Alexis de Tocqueville

This what happens when one imbibes spirits too early in the morning.....hallucinatory ramblings akin to a hippy on an acid trip. People eschew spiritual beverages early in the morn.....It is best to start 12.01 pm every day. The mind is clearer and the rest of the body has awoken already.

Buey Lurker I remember UBP members of parliament using there own money to build houses for the poor not to mention pave roads etc. Plus the UBP stay giving out scholarships, even the PLP in the early days, when they was Bahamianising everything.
I aint ga comment about the politician thingy but, I remember the likes of Rodney and Clarence Bain, Stevenson them, used to live for trying to better this Bahamas...not to mention the priest them back in the day...All of them seemed to be socially minded. Socialism seems to be good for this country.

There are inherent flaws in all systems of government, socialism, communism, and capitalism. It is virtually impossible to have a healthy balance incorporation beneficial aspects of each of these system in one.
Revisionist Old folks have these romantic views about our history and how everything so much better for all when they were younger, but if truth be told, the past was less beneficial to the ethnic majority who lived here. The level of poverty was at it's highest. High paying jobs in the banking and tourism sectors were not readily available to all the masses only a select minority. Political bribery was common among the wealthy landowners who were the only person allowed to reached for parliamentary offices in the Bahamas. A few back then managed to achieve relative success despite the system, but for the vast majority life was hard. So I am hesitant to say the past was a much better time for us. It was better for some, but not all.

miracles 01-23-08, - 03:31 PM I just want know what country you were living in, cause some of the things on your list never happened and never will. I noticed you said at one point and time all of the Caribbean was socialist, do you seriously consider the Bahamas to be in that category? I think you meant to say "life was simpler in the olden days".

Perhaps we need to define what socialism means...

In fact, I think the Bahamas is still categorized as socialist country along with Canada and England...I guess I should check...Lurker what are we now...
1bigfrog 05-08-08, - 09:44 AM I was looking for this thread for a while...
You know...the Bahamas aint bad you know...we have some serious issues, but we far better off than a lot of people.
Ah government(s) though awkward at times, have a system model which can rival some of them first world countries. And I believe its our socialism ties/past, where government is responsible for its citizens that have us with our heads above water during this rising tides.
Like, if your child RUDE and I mean so rude that you can't control them, what other country would you see that government would take them from you and raise them. They don't even have that program in America.
I mean, if you sick, you can go to a clinic and get the best doctors to look at you for near free. I mean specialist who does charge 2 to 3 hundreds dollars in their private practice. Not to mention that you can check yourself in Princess Margaret Hospital and stay and pay later.
Then we have all kinds of free after school and social programs that the government sponsors...
wow...
