The person who signed bail for a drug case defendant, who is believed to be dead in Haiti, may have to pay $80,000 to the court.

Robert Blanc, of Bacardi Road, was on bail pending trial in connection with a 375-pound marijuana seizure. When he missed his court date in January, Magistrate Carolita Bethel was informed that he had been murdered in Haiti in December. The murder was reportedly drug-related.

However, the court has not received official confirmation of his death. Blanc's surety told the court that Haitian officials had not released his body yet.

Magistrate Bethel pointed out that Blanc had breached three conditions of his release on $80,000 bail: He failed to make a court date; he did not report to the Carmichael Road Police Station; and he left the country without prior court approval.

Magistrate Bethel told the surety that she would have to give the court a reason why she should not pay the money that she had pledged to pay if Blanc breached his bail conditions.

Blanc was charged along with Chino Price. The trial against him will continue on April 26.

Police arrested the men on Blue Hill Road near Jiffy Cleaners when they stopped a Suzuki Baleno car. The officers allegedly found bales of marijuana in the car's seats and trunk.

I know it may seem cold but they need to start enforcing this on sureties. I see too many people that run and sign bail for people then when something goes wrong they come crying to the court for mercy. Signing bail is serious, don't do it if you are not prepared to suffer the consequences. At least make these careless pay a nominal amount for their lack of care.

Make them pay. Most of these people sign for other people with the idea that they can get out of paying it if anything happens. The courts should make these people pay so that people can think twice, or THREE times, before signing bail. People don't seem to understand that they are responsible for the people they sign bail for.

Well I cant sign bail for no one but if I could I was not doing it...not for no known criminals anyhow. If your brother and his girlfriend fight and she press charges das lil different but for serious crimes...hell no!

$80,000.00 I would have been on the next flight verifying that death and getting a death certificate.

That is the only easy way out of this situation.
