View Full Version : Importance of wetlands!!!
I am sorry for Guana Cay as much as for Bimini although I have never had the opportunity to visit Guana Cay yet. It's well known issue for me. The advantage is that people from Guana Cay are more active in fight against Baker's Bay than Biminites against Bimini Bay Resort. Well, they hate what Mr. Capo is doing and so on but that's all. They stay pretty indifferent.
I love that "before" picture of Guana Cay. I saw it many times but it always makes me sad. What's going on on both islands is insane! It's a rape, such a big havoc...
MOsquito Point before destruction

Yeah, but the group lost their Appeal in court yesterday and one of the points the Judge brought up was, the Bahamas do not have laws to protect the environment. Its hard to rule for the environment when there are no laws to use as a guideline.

I was so upset when they created Sandyport as I sat on the pond there and watched the ducks many evenings..now the ducks are no more!

Not only flooding. Mangroves are essential as buffers against storms and hurricanes, so we can expect lots of damages without these trees. Furthermore, the coastal erosion will dramatically increase.
hiphopanonymous 02-21-08, - 04:36 PM If you want to see more pics from Bimini, go on my webalbum: http://picasaweb.google.com/mangroves.jr
I wrote the article about Bimini Bay and it was published in the Punch along with some of these pics. :)
Once mangroves up North are destroyed, many fish and other sea critters including juvenile lemon sharks will disappear. Bimini are the only mangrove area in the whole east Bahama Bank so the results of north destruction can be disastrous.
We need to convince Bahamian government to be protective of the rest of Bimini! MPA has to be created! I think that the most trickiest thing is to overcome the corruption.
I saw that article in the Punch, kudos.
But how do we convince the government to be protective of the rest of BImini and make it a MPA?
I think the trichiest thing to overcome will be greed not corruption.

What a thought provoking comment and what a great contribution to this thread Rory.

heh, I'm glad to know that people read my article :)
Hum, how can we convince the government about the protection? Well, that's a question. I guess there is not an answer since we have to try more ways. Let's tell them our requests and complaints, let's tell to PM about his previous approval of proposal of Marine Protected Area for Bimini. Let's do it! Take an action! Bimini MPA has to be designed!
The government has to realize that mangrove wetlands are Bahamian heritage, treasure, habitats which feed people or can bring benefits for economy in shape of ecotourism. They need to get know the true value of mangrove wetlands!

I`m sure you`ll get a lot of support in fishing town for a MPA, why you don`t ask them to leave and go to Freeport or Nassau. If you ain`t from Bimini leave them people alone!!!!!!!:sparky:

?? Sorry, what's the point? Who should go to Freeport? I am a bit lost in your post...Am I doing anything wrong? I don't think so

I'm afraid these environmental advocates will have a rough and rocky road trying to impress anyone to take them seriously. First of all,the locals for the most part are happy to get rid of the mosquitos, get jobs and improve their financial security.
A few thoughtful people may get involved in this as environmental advocates, but as a lifelong visitor to Bimini,I doubt if it will be widespread.Bimini is not an affluent Cay and many will see this as a good oppurtunity.:)

Yeah, certainly, it's difficult to persuade the government and MPs.
Be aware that Biminites are not happy to see Bimini Bay being built on their island. It's just quite opposite! Believe me. As the visitor of Bimini you should know the true opinions and feelings of local people in regards of Bimini Bay Development.
Speaking about jobs, not many Biminites are working there...

Really? Well where are they? I don't see any posters claiming to be from Bimini.I haven't even heard someone influential like say Stevie S. join in on it.
It just may be that just like here in Abaco....most people are for the Baker's Bay project,BTW/which I do not support, but I am only voice in a sea of supporters.
People know what is good fa the environment, but they also need jobs and the staples of life on a daily basis.:hammer:

I wouldn't have said something like that if I hadn't been sure of it (my own experiences) They are in Alice Town, Porgy Bay, Bailey Town...just walk around!
Who do you think is influential? Well, Stevie S is Stevie S.
I think that many people from SGCR would oopose to your claim that most people are for the Baker's Bay project but ok that's your opinion.
