Solid article from the freeportnews.
Glad to see the BNT is pressuring Sidney Collie and the government to protect our wetlands here in Nassau.
Hey Mr. Collie! Don't forget about the last remaining wetland on P.I., which Atlantis renamed Flamingo lake......that needs protecting too!

I almost passed out when I saw what is happining in West Ridge, they (who ever "they" are), are filling in the Lakes, and no one knows??:realmad:
It makes me sick, lots of talk, but business as usual.

I think I saw that when I was flying out (or maybe in) to Nassau last month......there are a bunch of developments around the lakes.....some are filling them in and some are making canals.......it was scary to see a couple developments on the coast that seem to be moving inland into the lakes...I hope some government department is watching them very closely because if they mess up and let salt water into the freshwater underground glands it will screw a lot of people who rely on groundwater but also severly damage the ecosystem.
hiphopanonymous 02-05-08, - 12:56 PM Glad to see the Bahamas has signed onto the UN Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention)

stagalee_abaco 02-20-08, - 10:03 AM seems the only reason the gov't of the bahamas find wetlands important is because foreign developers want to dig them out to make marinas!!!!:realmad:

Sure, it's great but what's the real use? Mangrove wetlands are being destroyed in the Bahamas....Bimini, Guana Cay, Mayaguana. Where is the protection?
I am disappointed with the work of BNT in cause of Bimini!!! Why isn't Bimini Marine Protected Area as it was proposed in 2002? BREEF and also BNT consider Bimini to be top 5 places which should have been MPAs. Even PM Hubert Ingrahim supported this proposal. So what's happened....everyone knows. A foreign developer came, offered big money, made lots of promises about imporovements of Bahamian economy and the development named Bimini Bay Resort has started!!! If the project isn't stopped, wetlands of Bimini (the most important ecosystems) will be extensively destroyed....
Do you think that the ramsar has any word in it? NO...Money talks in all ways!
mangrove 02-20-08, - 01:17 PM Bimini Bay Resort destroyed the important area of Bimini - Mosquito Point - which made Bimini famous for its great nursery of bonefish!
Speaking of mangroves and Guana Cay.
There aren't many mangroves left at Bakers Bay anymore.

hiphopanonymous 02-20-08, - 02:57 PM Well muddo sick.
Thanks for the pics mangrove.
That's terrible the way those mangroves have been destroyed.
(Think I'm gonna use that one pic of the one green sprout in the middle of all the dead ones)

It is true money talks. Seems like you can do whatever you want to the environment if you got enough money (not just here, but around the world)
Are those pictures from the Bimini Bay project?
The mangroves are disappearing all over the Bahamas and have almost disappeared completely in Bimini. I have seen those horrible pictures of Bimini before and it makes me sick. Here is a before and after picture of Guana Cay. Its much worse now but Bimini is the worse that I have ever seen.
We need Environmental laws in the Bahamas. How do we do this? How can we get out the word?
mangrove 02-20-08, - 05:21 PM I am sorry for Guana Cay as much as for Bimini although I have never had the opportunity to visit Guana Cay yet. It's well known issue for me. The advantage is that people from Guana Cay are more active in fight against Baker's Bay than Biminites against Bimini Bay Resort. Well, they hate what Mr. Capo is doing and so on but that's all. They stay pretty indifferent.
I love that "before" picture of Guana Cay. I saw it many times but it always makes me sad. What's going on on both islands is insane! It's a rape, such a big havoc...
MOsquito Point before destruction

I wrote the article about Bimini Bay and it was published in the Punch along with some of these pics. :)
Once mangroves up North are destroyed, many fish and other sea critters including juvenile lemon sharks will disappear. Bimini are the only mangrove area in the whole east Bahama Bank so the results of north destruction can be disastrous.
We need to convince Bahamian government to be protective of the rest of Bimini! MPA has to be created! I think that the most trickiest thing is to overcome the corruption.
