Charges were not upgraded against two police officers accused of allegedly beating a suspect, who has since died, when they made a brief court appearance yesterday.
Corporal Donovan Gardiner, 36, is charged with causing grievous harm to Desmond Key, while he was locked up at the Grove Police Station for a traffic violation last June. Constable Tavares Bowleg, 31, is accused of abetment to causing grievous harm. Both officers were arraigned last August.
But Key, 28, a father of six, died in hospital this month. He was previously in a coma and on life support.
Magistrate Janet Bullard stepped down from the case in December 18, when she identified a potential conflict of interest. The case was reassigned to Magistrate Guillimina Archer, but she did not sit yesterday, so Magistrate Susan Charles-Sylvester adjourned the case for her. Gardiner and Bowleg return to court on April 10.
In other court news, a hotel employee has been charged with causing grievous harm to a coworker.
Prince Clarke, 20, denied that he injured Franklyn Rolle during a fight at the Atlantis hotel on Saturday, January 26.
He has been granted $5000 bail. A February 28 court date has been set.
Also, two bank workers and a teenage boy have been charged in connection with a credit card scam.
Troy Cargill, 19, of Sir Lynden Pindling Estates, and Demetria Rolle, 24, of Firetrail Road, who both worked at the Royal Bank of Canada's Credit Card Center, are accused of conspiring to steal money from the bank.
They are accused of stealing $13,500 from the center between December 15 and 17, as well as stealing a credit card.
Cargill faces additional charges along with a 14-year-old male resident of Sir Lynden Pindling Estates. Both are charged with conspiracy to stealing and carrying out the act.
Cargill and the teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, allegedly stole $42,200 between December 4 and January 16.
Cargill alone is charged with stealing seven credit cards from the credit card center.
Magistrate Carolita Bethel set bail for Cargill and Rolle at $15,000 each. The teenager's bail was set at $7,500.
One has got to wonder if it is REAL EASY to steal from the banks here. Almost every month last year and so far about 3 times for this year, former bank employees have been hauled before the courts for TEIFIN!!
In this case, what is a 19 year old and 14 year old doing with $42,200 in one month?:what: The 19 year old was charged with teifin 7 credit cards.
WOW. Almost makes ya want to hide ya money under the mattress again.
A long time banker said years ago FORMER bank employees used to teif money, little bit by bit from the interest on accounts as most Bahamians do not know how much interest SHOULD be on their accounts!!
