PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Suriname’s national telecommunications provider Telesur in cooperation with telecom multinational Nortel is implementing the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ project which was endorsed at the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society.

To initiate the programme Nortel’s vice-president Caribbean Region & Bermuda, Ray Bulengo on Wednesday handed over 200 laptop computers specially designed for the project to Telesur’s chief executive officer Dirk Currie. The programme is aimed at child development through information and communication technology. Suriname is the first country in the Caribbean to implement the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ project.

According to Bulengo, especially for the project, the programme ‘Learn It’ was designed and equipped with specific applications to introduce children to the world of computers and ICT.

“But we can’t do it (the project) alone. We will need help from governments and operators, who should come in with their infrastructure,” said Bulengo.

Telesur’s manager, Dirk Currie, noted that in cooperation with the Ministry of Education the laptops will be distributed to schools. He added that, since this year’s theme of the International Telecommunication Union is ‘Connect the Disabled,’ several of the laptop computers will be donated to the school for disabled children.

The handing over ceremony was part of the workshop ‘Connect the Caribbean Initiative’ which took place Wednesday here in Paramaribo during CANTO’s 24th Annual Meeting.

Simply put. We have to pay for progress.
