You know something. I had a thought just then. And, I know it may make me sound simple, but, I could not get this one when I sat down and it hit me.

The Doha Round is STILL deadlocked...
NAMA (non agricultural market access) is an issue, but so is AMA (agricultural market access) in a huge way, so says African and Developing countries.
EPA was signed with the premise that they need access to foreign markets- agricultural products in particular.

Their claim is that they don't have the due care and attention for protection, of their agricultural market, in order for them to grow, because the bigger producers (America and the EU), subsidize their farms and agricultural products, or, block foreign entry- by any means neccesary.

They are continually in the dispute settlement arena in Doha. If it's not shrimp one day, it's banana's the other day. The facts are there to back up the caterwalling.

Now. We are in a HUGE food shortage world-wide. Food prices are going up. Factors are increased consumption from Emerging Markets and Bio-fuel usage, which depletes inventory and drives up demand. To top it all off, food technology, has taken a back-seat to financial and manufacturing tech.

My thing is, how can African and Caribbean countries, cry about lack of market access into developed countries and other developing markets, and in fact, say that their goods, spoil and are kicked to the curb, which causes them to underproduce, due to lack of consumer base, when we have GLOBAL food shortage and demand, for food, organic and processed, are going through the roof, with prices?

Are African and Caribbean producers crying wolf?

I am not a commodities trader or investment analyst, so someone, who may be a bit more in the know, shed some light on this for me.
:)

Check your facts. There is no food shortage. There is an imbalance of supply -- whereby poor countries do not have access to the money to buy food. Many countries are experiencing a drought regime, and they are wracked by civil war, but certainly there is no global food shortage.

I guess you read the Toronto Star like I do.

I said, I am no commodities specialist, so, thank you for putting up an idea, as I was simply asking.

No need to get all tiffy Lurker. Please! Let's talk about the issues.

However, prices are still rising Lurker. That is not due to an imbalance, that is due to an apparent shortage. If you were to say, food was available in developed markets, at a cheap rate, then it would lead me to concur with you, that the imbalance theory, is plausible. However, there certainly is no glut in the market.

You forgot one important element in food prices - fuel.

Taking food supply out of the equation, with a barrel of oil sitting at $85 - $95 dollars, the production and transportation of food contribute greatly to the sale price of the commodity.

This re-incarnation of Alien is the best one yet.

He hasn'tpicked NEAR as many fights and he actually seems to have listened and picked up some of the things other members have said.

Go back to about April of last year. You can actually trace the maturity.

Good show Alien/Y2k/round-robin...I proud a you! :D:

Round robbin een Alien. Round Robbin can spell, he/she does not have anger management issues, and does not colour arguments with partisanship, but rather with intelligence.

I go back and forth on it.

Round-robin does seem to have better control of his temper and rarely mentions political parties.

Maybe that church he is going to in London change him. Maybe he find G_D....

LOL!

I don't think even God can temper his hate for the FNM. Look at RR's Batelco thread - there is almost no mention of any political party.

If Kareem and Alien weren't posting at the same time, I'd say that Alien is Kareem more than RR!

Personally, conversing with RR is much more pleasing that YK. At least RR is objective about his/her arguments even if we don't see eye to eye.

Good riddance!

Now, how we get Rory back in the fray?!

And I guess YOU, of all people, don't smatter your arguments with partisanship? You come on as if Sir Lynden, asked your mom to abort you.

In any event, I actually liked Alien. The Republican liberal that he is. But, the looking for posters under separate pen names is as useless as me, looking into who the dark forces were/are- it is a useless exersize.

I must inform you that I am not an Alien Sunny.

He went missing and that is sad. He had promise and still does. As angry as he was, he made sense- just as much sense as Lurker does, when he is not ranting on against the PLP.

Actually when I saw the thread title "Am I Crazy", I was just going to post the short answer..."yes."
