Nassau, Bahamas - The Cultural Affairs Division of the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture is once again inviting all interested persons throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to participate in the National Poetry Competition.
REQUIREMENTS
Each entry should identify the name, date of birth, mailing address and telephone and/or fax number(s) of the author. There will be $1000.00 awarded to the first place winner along with and award. Second and Third place winners will receive awards only. There will be an entry fee of $5.00 Dollars per poem The Deadline for entries is Friday December 31th, 2004 at 1:00p.m.
SUGGESTED TOPICS
This year since we are celebrating the 275th year of Parliament in The Bahamas and 166 years of emancipation from slavery we are suggesting that those two topic be used in writing your poems, however, it is not "etched in stone" that those topics be the only ones used in creating your works of art.
RULES
1. The competition is opened to Bahamians and residents of at least
six months prior to date of entry. Proof of residency must be
submitted with entries if entrant is not a Bahamian citizen.
2. Entrants must be 17 years or older. The Cultural Affairs Division
of The Ministry of Youth, Sports, & Culture has the right to
satisfy itself that the conditions relating to age are met.
3. No more than two poems per person will be permitted.
4. There is no limit to subject matter or theme.
5. The style of the work should be poetry not prose.
6. All works must be unaided.
7. Poems should be no longer than 500 words. Works more than
500 words will be subject to disqualification.
8. The decisions of the judges are final and may not be enquired
into.
9. Poem may be written in either dialect or standard English.
10. Entrants shall retain ownership of the copyright of their works.
The Government, however, reserves the right to publish selected
works submitted in anthology.
11. Poets by submitting entries, warrant that works have not been published.
12. Poems will not be returned to entrants.
13. Judges will not be allowed to discuss scores, positions, make comments, or give advice with regards to any entry.
14. The Government reserves the right to alter or amend any rule in any way that it sees fit.
15. Entries may be mailed to the attention of Keva Cartwright,
Morro Castle, Cultural Affairs Division, Ministry of Youth,
Sports & Cultural. PO.Box N-4871, Nassau, NP, Bahamas.
16. Judges reserve the right to reject any unsuitable entry.
17. The Cultural Affairs Division must receive all entries by
1:00p.m. on Friday December 31th, 2004 at Mono Castle,
Deans Lane.
18. Entrants, by submitting entries, agree to be bond by the Rules and Regulations of the Competition.
