There are alot of reasons.
I dont think there is a lack of vision but lack of support from different areas, esspecially in finance.
It seems as if you can only start a business here if you have money from your previous drug dealing/transprtation business.
We should have supported the mailboat businesses to grow them into viable shipping firms and ferry services.
Hell, whatever happened to airfreight? Not huge jumbo freighters but at least small enough to move stuff by air to the family islands.

Quite sure.
G&G operates out of Port laDania, owned by Steve Ganoe and Mike Grandonico.
Bernuth operates out of the Miami River and is owned by a Haitian family. The company is run by the eldest sister now. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name. I know the company was for sale a little while ago, so I suspect that someone bought up their market share (Tropical?) and is introducing Bahamas service.

There is certainly a lack of vision when people like MSC, Seaboard and Crowley are breaking the backs of the Bahamian shipping companies like Betty K and Pioneer.
People (with more than sufficient financing, BTW) have pulled out of the marine transportation business. YII Shipping has ceased operations. The mailboats don't want to comply with international regulations, so they stay home mostly now. Island Shipping used to operate twin landing crafts internationally and domestically. Scott Weatherford in Abaco got pushed out of his own route by his 'partner' Tropical. Domestic routes, normally reserved only for Bahamians, are now granted to the Mediterranean Shipping Comany (MSC).
It seems as if you can only start a business here if you have money from your previous drug dealing/transprtation business.
Its clear that you have to leverage your own money (however ill gotten) to make anything work. Even then, the rate of foreign intrusion into the market means you have no ammo for the rate war they are capable of launching at you.
We should have supported the mailboat businesses to grow them into viable shipping firms and ferry services.
You don't know how many people have proposed the same thing over the years. But every mailboat operator prefers to guard his route and keep the gov't subsidies flowing instead of banding together to update the fleet. The only exception I can point to is the FiestaMail, who actually have something I would call a ship in service.
Ferries get a bad name because the airlines threaten the goverment they'll pull out of the air routes. Political pressure backed by entrenched operators mean the small man will never make any headway. Is it a losing situation? I hope not because my future depends on it! :D
Hell, whatever happened to airfreight? Not huge jumbo freighters but at least small enough to move stuff by air to the family islands.
There are plenty small air freight operators, but they are usually governed by visual flight rules (VFR) and can't fly at night or during heavy weather. When you can put the equivalent of 10 x Boeing 747 cargo decks on a single 175' ship operating at a tenth of the cost, ocean shipping is by far the most economical. Add to the equation that oil based paint, gas cannisters, bleach and many other hazardous materials cannot fly and short haul air freight is relegated to parcel services.

North Andros was not always like that. We once had four U.S routes by local ship owners, the Lady Calvese, the Lisa J, the Challenger and the lady Margo.
As posted above they could not afford to keep up with the U.S regulations and eventually went out of business. I remember one of those boats being cited by the Coast Guard for so many infractions that it was about 3 months before they were allowed to return to the Bahamas. The boat was in no condition to even turn back for Andros.
It is very expensive to run these routes unless you have a regular flow of freight. G.G and Bernuth have other family island routes besides Andros and can cover any losses.
Bernuth is taking most of GG business in North Andros as they are much cheaper.
I went to G.G. in Lauderdale to ship a pallet of groceries valued at about $500.00, they charged me $285.00 for the pallet. It was not even full.
I went to Bernuth who charged $99.00 for the same pallet. G.G will also have you checking the docks to see if they reach, they do not stick to their schedule.
Bernuth is a welcomed shipping alternative in North Andros.
