Having had some schooling in Upstate New York in the Boonies literally I remember a few years back feeling a sense of pride, if that, at being able to say to my then all white friends that I literally came from an 80% black populated country where the money was on par, the educational system on par and in many cases advanced, economic stability, social stability.
At the time I was one of maybe 10 black students in an all white arena and feeling for the first time the pangs of being considered a minority - even worse dealing with do you still live in huts and all the other ignorant questions associated with being an Islander.
Coming back home and settling in it never behooved me that anything was wrong with me - because I was black.
it's amazing because I think we are one of the very few countries in the world where we are privileged to have the discussion of whether or not we are ready for a white leader not vice versa .
in the news belize just elected their first black http://caribbeannetnews.com/news-5936--27-27--.html
and there may be a black president in America soon .
I actually feel surreal sometimes because as jacked up as our country is - I never had a self esteem problem as a black person - i almost can't identify with the whole racism thing at the levels it has risen to globally even though there are quite a few conchy joe people who don't know what to say sometimes and they congregate to their little white communities because here i feel home - at ease .
i gatta worry bout the neighbor dog tearing up pampers in front of my yar and people teifing but - i belong

Ethnic groups of all kinds tend to gravitate towards living in nieghbourhoods filled with people of the same ethicity, that is how major cities end up with areas commonly know as "china town", "little italy", "french quarter", etc.
It is not a racist thing, but ethno-centrism.
