Even though The Bahamas is ranked one of the wealthiest nations in the Caribbean, there are many people in the country who live well below the poverty line.
Coconut Grove resident, 65-year-old Almond Stubbs is among that group. His only source of income is the monthly check that he receives from the
Department of Social Services. Stubbs lives in what can only be described as squalid and unsanitary conditions, and he has been unemployed since the early 1980s.
"I used to work in the tourism industry for a very long time," he said yesterday. "But now I have to wait for government assistance when they give me my $200 check."
For the past 20-odd years, Stubbs has lived in a four-room dilapidated shack that leans to one side. The windows are broken, the roof is torn and there is no indoor plumbing.
Stubbs' plight has been taken up by businessman and lawyer Paul Moss, and Sam Williams of the Bahamas Loving Care Association. They believe there is a direct correlation between people living in conditions similar to Stubbs' and the recent surge in violence.
Stubbs said he has two children who help him out but they are unable to give him the type of financial assistance he needs.
It's about food. It’s about your home. It’s about your life. The government is worried about all of the above.... Personal responsibility has now become government responsibility.Neil Cavuto,
Where is the personal responsibility?
Brown Suga 02-13-08, - 07:05 AM I'm sorry but come again. Why can't a big man find a job for 28 years. This is unbelievable. Some of us are too lazy and want to sit down waiting on handouts. He can work, nothing is said about him being disabled.
This is not the government's responsibility!

What did he do with his money while working in the very lucrative tourism industry? Did he save, or like a lot of workers in that industry, did he squander it because it flowed so consistently?

Some of them don't need to work! A few years ago I lived near Jacksonville, Fl. There was a man who stood on a corner of an off ramp of 295 in Jacksonville, everyday. He held a " Veteran, Will work for food" sign. He averaged $1000.00 to $1500.00 A DAY! He ended up in jail charged with murder. It seems another homeless man made the mistake of moving in on the Vets territory at the off ramp and was murdered for "trespassing".
lynette 02-13-08, - 09:57 AM And he have children too? Where they living and why he aint living with them?
Too many people do not want to be held accountable for their deeds. Most people in situations like his never planned and when you dont plan, you plan to fail. If he was saving and investing and thinking about retirement then he would not have this problem. If he 'cared' for his children and invested time and proper values in them then perhaps he would be living where they are and not where he is.
bahamiangoddess 02-13-08, - 12:39 PM Almond Go Get A Job!!
wide eye 02-13-08, - 12:47 PM And we are supposed to feel sorry for this man, why? Is it because he "can't" get a job or does not want a job? Come on man, if you are willing to work there is work, and that is just what it is, WORK!
da_kraziest_kris 02-13-08, - 01:17 PM If Social Services wasnt giving him a check every month, then he would have had no choice but to go and work!
I blame the government for dishing out public funds unnecessarily!!
Sunnyjohn 02-13-08, - 01:19 PM So he was 45 when he lsot his job?

Anywho, is there not any organizations that can help people out that are in need? Nobody should be living under those type of conditions anymore in the Bahamas.

There's nothing wrong with this man. He is looking for pity and hand outs he had a job for years in the tourism industry what did he do with his money?? obviously he squandered it because he sure didn't put ot to use to fix up his house or anything... You're poor and a political party tells you they are for the poor, you obviously have no common sense to know if you don't get out there and work dog will eat your lunch!
