Good to see the government will finally be doing something to restore and preserve the historic and beautifull Collins House.
The government has let that building decay for too long.
Hopefully they will do a good job of it, can't wait to here more developments on this issue.

Is it anything to do wit Collins wall?Former Ministry of Education hosue and a national historic building....it cannot be rebuilt, it has to be restored...
LotusPhoenix 02-17-08, - 02:24 PM We should make an effort to restore all of our mansions. Its so sad to see such beautiful buildings lay to waste.

Well, Collin’s Wall when around Collin’s house called Centerville.
The Bahamas has needed a Museum, a proper one, for a long time. What better place than that house? It is in itself historical and if the people fixing it up do a good job the house itself would show how the buildings of the past looked.
Also, to build something of a good size to house a Museum would be ruinously expensive even if one could find convenient land close enough to town to be accessible to visitors.
The land it stands on is big enough to build extensions to a Museum should that ever become needed.
The National Art Gallery was once a grand house of the past. It is now open to all and the building itself is a work of art. Collins house would be like that a blending of the past with today.
The old Royal Victoria Hotel would have been a great place for a Museum. However, it was left to fall into ruins. Let us not make that mistake again with another building.

What makes it a national historic building? That's what I am asking. We have the Cabinet building and the Clarence Bain bldng- both of which look shabby.
Are they of any historical importance? No. So, what makes this house, such a house for restoration and why is it important?
Simple question....

Ok....so this is Collins house, has nothing to do with Collins wall. Cool.
So, it is more about picking an old house for a national musuem, rather than picking a house called Collins house as something "special"....just an old house, and we need it to build a museum.
However, don't we have a national art gallery there, or, next to it anyways?
:dgi:
I went there for a function we did for the community I was working in. Met some people from the AIDS foundation and the people, who run the building.

No, the wall was the wall that ran around the house!

No, Collin's house is opposite the Tribune's offices.

Ok....it is not by the Xavier's school. It looks like the same type of architecture- in fact- all Bahamian architecture looks the same.
However, is this house, or is it no, related to Collins wall!??!
Yes or no. Did Collins wall, get it's namesake from the man, who the Collins house is named after?
I just want to know CG...my goodness! No need to be so conspiratorial and secretive!!

Collins House is special because it is a beautiful, old Bahamian building. It was built in the 1930's and sits on a large tract of land. The architecture of the building is interesting and impressive.
Not sure if it has anything to do with Collins Wall, not sure what that is, but it could be the wall that is on the back of the property by Wulf road.

Cool.
It's just an old house, with no value at all, aside from being an old run down house.

It's a good move.
Alien 02-17-08, - 03:57 PM Usually, when we designate a house as a historic site, the site, normally has some significance- aside from being old.
For example- was it a former slave house?
Was it the house of a Governor?
Did Royalty stay there?
Was it a place of business?
etc...
While we need a museum, this house has nothing going for it, aside from the fact that it's old.
SpamStopper 02-17-08, - 06:43 PM Alien, sounds like it is just an old House that is an eye sore and as it is not doing anything they must feel it is a perfect spot which will have ample parking and be close to Bay Street, for whatever it is they are going to turn it into. :)
songbird 02-17-08, - 07:13 PM sounds likes you need to research for us Alien.
HOMEWORK LOL!!! :hammer:
but what i know is that a very rich man named Mr. Collins lived there. St. Andrew's used to be there, (i think) then the Ministry of Education now this Museum thingy.
my daddy told me that Collin's wall ran from that house there almost to the New Road (Wulff Road) and all of the land in it belonged to Mr. Collins. no one could go in, as it was private property.
