View Full Version : Traffic Police
Nobody with sense can understand these stupid traffic stops on cable beach strip during the day, instead of at night or patrols at night (when all the real criminals are out), as you never see a police at night, must be scared of the dark, or someone in the head of the police or government has another agenda, or has their own little crime spree going on at night so they dont want to get any police out there at night. The government really needs to wake up, and its not just the PLP, they are all the same apparently. Oh, they could also save some lives, like all the young people dying from DUI.
By the way, i never see a police on Eastern Road, maybe 2 cars in the past 7 months (except for the prison run). Whats up with that?? And thats during the day also. Ive never seen a motorbike cop at all ever in the East.
Another thing, if they really wanted to make money, now here is a simple idea, drive around and book people for not using a signal when turning. People that dont use signals should be arrested anyway, as they are jepardising my and others lives. Signals are more important than brake lights even, as it tells you that a person is going to almost stop to turn, whereas brake lights only let you know they are slowing down.
And around 90+% of bahamian drivers (if you can call them that) do not signal, about 60% of those that do only do so AS THEY TURN, which is useless. I say arrest them all!!! Or at least take their licence. The traffic dept needs to be revamped, all licenced drivers need to be relicenced, and laws like using a signal need to be reinstated and upheld. Hmm, then there may actually be less accidents and even deaths on the roads. The myth that speeding kills, is exactly that, speed doesnt kill, its drivers who cannot drive properly or lapse for a second, that kill, especially other drivers such as the majority of bahamian drivers. They just cant drive! If you have to make pathetic speed limits of 30mph in fear of people crashing, those people shouldnt be on the road!
It seems that the majority of deaths are due to DUIs at 3am and or simply people that cannot drive a car, alot are because of other people causing the accident that kills the other person. So many Bahamians cannot drive or handle their vehicle. They cant even take a corner without struggling. TAKE THEM OFF THE ROAD! I see them every day, all day driving around nassau, where are the traffic cops.
Im glad I have a jeep, at least I stand a chance of surviving. I had 2 major accidents in a car because of people that cant drive. One was 3am in the morn where an accident on a main road, a ton of rain, and no hazzard lights, caused me to crash into the existing accident. The other people involved simply had no sense or intellegence to turn on their hazzard lights. Another accident was a guy hitting me doing 100 mph, high on drugs, no licence, no insurance, no inspection, hit and run, and I was charged. If it was a left hand car i would b dead because of the police not doing there job, and plus this guy would have got off. Dumb police, where DO they get their training???!
I saw 10 people yesterday come out in front of me, I overtook them all to prove a point. They should be arrested for attempted assault on me and my vehicle! Anyway, when I get some money Im getting a bigger steel ARB bumper and just gassing it anytime someone does that, say goodbye to their little vehicle! HA.
Anyway, I guess after they take care of the crime situation they may have a chance to do something about the traffic problems in the bahamas. Yeah right!!@
Oh yeah, if you dont agree with me, well too bad, because I dont care, as you are then one of those bad drivers!@#

I Totaly agree that our traffic department only appears to be on the job when something happens or some one dies on the street. BUT BE REST ASSURED WE WILL SEE THEM BACK ON THE STREET WHEN THE TREASURY BECOMES LOW IN FUNDS.

I mean, come on! "a ton of rain", and you crashed into an existing accident. A good driver knows the importance of driving much slower during rainy weather. And were your headlights on? How can you not see that there is an accident causing a road block ahead? I too have driven late nights during rainy weather even once during a tropical storm. I know better that to drive at speeds in excess of 30 mph. There are lots of obstacles that can occure during these driving conditions. I don't think you were being responsible with the way you were driving that night. And please do not insult the police officers. These people have a tough enough job without people insulting them and making their jobs stressful. If you were in the U.S. and you were to insult an officer you would have already committed an arrestable offence. And if your luck is as bad as you are making it seem, you would have also gotten the beating of you life. Let me make myself clear. What I'm trying to say here is this. Before you can critisize others you have to evaluate yourself and what would you do if you were put in their situation?

#1 - this thread refers to traffic, not generall problems like crime etc, so dont get it confused. Also, you are not even living in the Bahamas, according to your profile, so you cant talk. You obviously left to get away, if you are even bahamian, that is. oh yeah, Miami isnt real america though anyway, its really little cuba.
next...
Nowhere in my post did i insult a police officer. Also, I have never been beaten by anyone because i can defend myself, and would and have done against anyone who tries to 'beat' me, as I would be totally in my legal rights. (maybe you got beat in miami from resisting arrest??!) There is no law against voicing your opinion. It is not an arrestable offense to call someone another name or insult them even if they are a police, not in the United States. And we also live in a free country, so I can legally insult anyone I want to, including any government officials if I wanted, but i dont care about that. So long as there are no phsyical attacks or threats made.
i am a good driver, and I can actually drive my vehicles, and use signals, headlights, brake lights etc etc etc. I took my license in the UK, and spent years driving in the US. 99% of bahamian drivers, that I see on the road every day (I drive 4-8 hours a day), cannot even drive a vehicle and should be taken off the road, including alot of police!
As for the police issue you bring up, bad management is responsible for most of the problems in the Bahamas, from police, government, to general businesses.
I always have my headlights on at night. I always signal. Try driving in a thunderstorm and then you see an accident in the middle of the road where it is not supposed to be, and they are breaking the law by not having on hazzard lights. Maybe I am breaking the bahamas' prehistoric 30mph law doing 40mph, but thats a normal speed under any conditions, so book me. Ive never ever got a ticket in my life and Im 31 and driven in 3 different countries. Remember the woman hit me into the other car. I did not hit them.
Anyway good luck, im sure you are one of those 'slow' drivers that dont get anywhere and hold this country back in the 3rd worl,d because nothing ever gets done :-0
I can actually live with slow drivers, bad drivers, but people that dont signal or turn in front of you, that just goes over the line.
If i were in their possition, I would be driving the police vehicle around like its supposed to be, following people, and booking them for no signals, we would make a fortune, and at the same time we could actually save some lives and stop some accidents (alot if not all accidents in the bahamas are caused by drivers that cannpt drive their vehicle, dont signal, etc). I would have police cars on every major corner, especially at night, like in the US and other 1st world countries. The police 'management' needs proper training from other countries on how to do their job properly.
good luck
only fools argue over the internet.
(whoops, so maybe Im a fool also, like you :-)
Hi friends. This is a friendly website isn't it? Even if it isn't, it's better to cooperate than to confrontate.
Both of you have some good points. The key is to listen to one another and to respect one another even if there is no agreement. Name calling is not necessary.
Rory I agree with you about bad drivers. I also agree with you about police presence. I again agree with you about police management. I disagree with you about road blocks in the Cable beach area.
There are a lot of bad drivers in the Bahamas because many people got their driver's licenses without taking the requisite test. To correct this we need drivers to retake the test every five years. We also need to tighten up on the system so it is impossible to get a license without taking and passing the drivers test.
To facilitate test-taking we should use the media, especially television, to educate the public about driving rules and procedures. We should, in this day and age, also use the internet. Driver training will reduce the accident rate. It should also result in lower insurance fees.
Whenever someone is charged with a driving offence, part of the process should involve them taking and passing driver education classes.
Police presence can result in increased income from fines for traffic violations and in reduced crime. The money raised from traffic fines should, in the first instance, be used to buy more transportation and communication equipment for the police.
We need mechanized witnesses - cameras, at various locations in the Bahamas to record what is going on. People behave better when they are supervised. This too will help reduce crime and increase the probability that criminals will get caught.
I feel the police should be having a road block in at least one place in Nassau at every hour of the day. This will deter criminals because the probability of encountering police while they are transporting weapons or other contraband will increase. We will also catch people with no license or inspection. The police should have computers in their cars or be able to radio in a license plate number to determine if the license and inspection are current and who the vehicle is licensed to and whether there are outstanding warrants for the person.
It is clear that leadership and management are lacking in the police force. The police leadership is non-responsive and cares only about being on TV. They have no vision for how to deal with crime. They have no vision for the kind of Bahamas they want to see. They have no vision.
We need to move down to the next line of leadership because there are many positive things that need to happen with the police force which will only happen with visionary leadership.
yes, but cable beach is not exaclty a place with high criminal presence, therefore they should be out in the ghettos or more business oriented areas, where the crime is located, or where the criminals come and go from. also, bike cops are useless, for road blocks, they cant chase a vehicle. i just laugh when they wave me down.

Anyone who defends the traffic ploice or the lack there of either 1. dont live here or 2. dont drive here. And my dear freind who said she drives at 3am let me advise you that you would not want to get in a accident at that time in the mourning because if what i am saying is true there willl be a very long wait for a traffic officer lets say 1hour and a half to two hours.
And you being a lady should know the dangers of that.

I don't care to defend the traffic police. As a matter of fact, I don't even like some cops. I do know for a fact that even in the U. S. cops tend to block all traffic for an accident. I was leaving Miami 2 months ago to visit back home and I almost missed my plane because of an accident. I sat in the taxi for almost 90 minutes on I95 going back to Miami International Airport. When the cab finaly got to the head of the traffic jam I noticed that out of 5 lanes only two were open. The other three were closed because a miami police officer was blocking them of with cones. Now keep in mind that the accident was only in one lane. The far right lane. There was no reason to block those other 2 lanes. And I guess what, this is normal proceedure in the states to do this. So you can't keep ripping at the bahamian police officers for doing their jobs. Just for a reminder to all of you reading this reply. I have been living in the Ft. Lauderdale for four and a half years and everything we bahamians complain about in the Bahamas happens in the states. Don't let people like rory gas you heads up about home! There are lots of traffic lights that do not work here, lots of street lights, street signs are down people running red lights. And the frustrating thing is that they will drive at a speed of 30 mph on a 45 mph street and run a red light like they are in a hurry to get somewhere. I have went into mcdonalds and other fast food restaurants and employees are holding up the lines having personal conversations with someone they know. They are rude and will cuss you out for telling them they gave you the wrong order. They will hold traffic up talking with someone in another car or on the side of the street. And it realy doesn't matter what race they are. They can all be rude and inconsiderate. And the police officers here break more traffic laws than the regular commuters. They weave in and out of traffic. They speed, run lights, cross over solid white lines, don't use turning signals and better yet they are not in any emergencies. Also the police officers in the U.S. are just as corrupt as they say the bahamian police officers are. There was a case where a FBI agent was driving drunk down the wrong direction of the highway and killed two innocent young black males. The police tried to cover up evidence and he got off. Now explain how a drunk speeding driver can kill two young men and be found innocent in a court of law for manslaughter but guilty for driving drunk? To all you out there whor have nothing constructive to say about the bahamas, I suggest you try living in another country and then make a final judgement about the bahamas. This website is a tool for us to speak our minds and we are doing so but I wish we stop using it for a complain site. If I was a from another country not knowing anything about the bahamas and was to read the quotes on this site I would think the bahamas is the scum country of the earth. I still spend lots of time in nassau whenever I have a break from school. And I don't have the bad experiences like you guys claim. Maybee you folks are magnets of chaos. I drive through elizabeth estates, I drive through fox hill, carmichael rd, wolf rd, east street macky street, blue hill, it doesn't matter what time of day. Its not that bad even during rush hour in the mornings and after school or knockoff shift. Its not that bad. Every you go in the world there gonna be bad traffic. Its like this in LA, New York, Florida, England, wherever. Its called civilization. If you don't like it go to the countryside somewhere and enjoy your lonely peace!

hmm, i lived in england and spent many years in NY, and even in flordida. I dont know where you live but it is completely different in the Bahamas. Ofcourse if you live in the ghettos in the US, it would be the same as Nassau. In the normal middle class areas, street signs are generally there, people generally dont run red lights, not as much as here, and there are cops on every corner ready to book them if they do.
Noone said there was no traffic anywhere else. The topic is that the traffic cops here are USELESS. they should be out at 3am when all the fatalities are, drunk drivers, guns etc.

Rory, no offence to you but I think you are a pretty dumb guy who can't be satisfied no matter where you live. If you lived in other countries were things are alot better for you why don't you consider living there permanently. For you information I don't live in the ghetto! Your assumptions are as misguided as you are. I live on the outskirts of miramar. Just a few block out of pemproke pines. I work in davie. On a regular basis I hardly pass through any ghetto neighborhoods. Especialy because I don't want to get robbed or jacked for my car and money. No matter where I drive, regardless if it is in liberty city or aventura, there are bad drivers all around. The only difference I can pin point about the bahamian drivers is that they tailgate at a high rate of speed. My brother who lives in fox hill gave me a ride from the airport and I regained memory of how fast bahamians tailgates. I will give the drivers of the bahamas credit on this bad habbit because even though this is a frequent bad habbit. There hardly as many accidents in the bahamas due to this than there are in other countries like here in the U.S.
thanks for callimng me dumb, im quite far from that if you actually knew me and what i do.
anyway, since you insulted me im not going to even read the rest of your message as it means absolutely nothing to me.
have a nice life

How about laying the problem for traffic frustrations where they belong: on all of us lazy, materialistic Bahamians who have over populated the island with cars! (Although I no longer reside in the Bahamas I did so for 40 years and visit often.) I say it is way past time for us to consider adopting similar laws that exist in Bermuda that limits the number of cars per household. Let's face it, no amount of policing is sufficient when congestion leads to so many other problems that are too overwhelming for even the most resourceful police force to tackle. We all know that frustrations from traffic congestion often leads to inconsiderate behaviour etc. (Thank God we have not escalated to the level of road rage currently seen here in the US - at least as far as I am aware - although I hate to admit that following a recent visit, it would not surprise me to hear about such an incident in the not too distant future unless we take drastic steps in the short term!)Further, consider the reality that the Bahamas's force is no where close to being adequate for many reasons and that is not going to change anytime soon. So, what can each of us do? We know the answer but as ususal.............
