Four women were inside the Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park when a gunman announced a holdup and led them into a backroom, but two more customers walked into the robbery in progress, a source familiar with the investigation of the quintuple slaying said Friday.
Killed were store manager Rhoda McFarland and customers Connie Woolfolk, Jennifer Bishop, Sarah Szafranski and Carrie Hudek Chiuso. A sixth woman survived a gunshot wound on her neck.
The gunman walked into the store near Harlem Avenue and 191st Street sometime after 10 a.m. Saturday and began chatting with the four women, then announced the robbery and took them in the back.
While he was there, the two other women walked in and the gunman forced them in back as well, the source said.
The killer bound them with duct tape he brought with him, forced them to the floor and covered their heads with clothing, sources said. He also fondled one of the victims, Tinley Park police confirmed.
At some point, McFarland called 911 on her cell phone, and police believe the gunman opened fire after he overheard the dispatcher asking her questions, the source said.
Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene, the source said, and earlier Friday a dive team searched a retention pond near the store, looking for the killer's weapon. Later in the afternoon, they were searching areas around both the eastbound and westbound entrance ramps to Interstate Highway 80 at Harlem Avenue and at La Grange Road.
