Court dismisses charges against concert promoter

By ARTESIA DAVIS, Guardian Senior Reporter, artesia@nasguard.com

A magistrate dismissed armed robbery and causing harm charges against concert promoter Trevor Davis after witnesses failed to show up for the continuation of a preliminary hearing yesterday.

Reggae star Leshorn Whitehead, who is better known by his stage name "Chuck Fenda", accused Davis, and other unnamed men, of gun-butting him during a hold-up outside the Millennium Gardens home of radio DJ Dion "Da Butcha" Knowles on August 20, 2007.

Whitehead was robbed of jewelry and cash with a combined value of $4,300. But only Whitehead and Knowles testified at the hearing to determine whether there was enough evidence for Davis, 40, of Palmetto Village, to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

Magistrate Renae McKay had told the prosecution that yesterday was the last chance to get the five remaining witnesses to court.

She discharged the case when they were no-shows. Although Davis has been discharged, the charges against him can be reinstated.

Davis, who was represented by lawyer Roger Minnis, was freed on bail two weeks after his arraignment in August.

Whitehead went to Knowles' home to record an apology to his fans who expected him to perform at a concert that was organized by Davis' company. Whitehead, who did not perform because of a pay dispute, alleged that a group of men attacked him as he was about to get into his car.

In other court news, a man was charged with stealing mobile phones worth $15,147 and televisions valued at $3,797 during a February 6 break-in at Cellular World on Rosetta Street.

Chadwin Curry, 33, of Kemp Road, denied the shop breaking and theft charges during an arraignment before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez. Curry also denied that he was found with three of the phones that were allegedly stolen from the shop.

Curry's bail has been set at $10,000 with two sureties. He returns to court on March 11 for a fixture hearing.

Curry was represented by attorney Jomo Campbell. Inspector Clifford Daxon is the prosecutor.
