I propose that we have a public transport initiative.

Slowly faze Bus operators off of Deisel fuel.

Start a mini transport train, well, for us, a MAJOR transport train from PI, to West Bay, circle to Shirley Street and back to East Bay.

Would the last proposal cut traffic in half in the long term? I bet it would cost an arm and a leg....sigh....

DIESEL is not the problem its the KIND of Diesel we use.

New fuel technology has made diesel a cleaner burning fuel than regular gasoline. Unfortunately many of our bus drivers in the Bahamas don't keep their vehicle properly maintained leading to the noxious cloud of smoke and emissions.

We also import a substandard grade of diesel (and regular fuel).
Did you know that over half of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus fleet uses LNG?

I support a public transit initiative. Nassau has too many cars.

Is a mono-rail or a small train service, "too much"...is that too progressive to put into the pipelines? Is the fear of even starting something like this, too great because it will take years to put forward- just for the opposition, to win the government and either scrap and/or "change" the plans forward?

The union would fight it tooth and nail as it would put many bus drivers and taxi drivers out of a job. Great idea but the reality is that it will not happen in the near future.

I think it even goes beyond the type if diesel we use... It is obvious that these busses are not serviced properly cause the emissions are TERRIBLE... U drive behind a bus using this already bad diesel and needing a tune up all u see and inhale is the BLACK SMOKE FROM HELL!!! My question is how are they passing inspection... I GUESS ANOTHER CASE OF SOMEBODY GETTING PAID!!

The union, bus drivers and taxi drivers could be the owners or share holders.

I say shoot em....seriously.

Nothing ever goes forward around here because we are afraid of a 2% opposition. And them we go into a never ending spiral debate, and suggestion and consultation while this place becomes more and more of a slum. Let 'em picket and stand on the tracks as a Nassau tram comes barreling towards them. Some of these union leaders need to play in traffic.

Things need to start being done in the public interest damnit.

Nice. But, will THAT happen? Politicians in bed with business men and woman are way tooo greedy to let THAT happen.

However, should we encourage public transportation business men to enter their companies into the public trading market?

Should we?

I think the time is ripe for some type of transport initiative, over due in fact.

As mentioned in previous post we cannot be held hostage by 2 or is it 1 % of the population.

We live in a gridlock, bumper to bumper to bumper traffic, but alas who has the political will?

I agree that the Bahamas is held hostage by a small minority, those that are afraid of change or afraid their "change" may be shortened. As a whol;e Bahamians do not like change, we are to set in our ways and it usually takes a foreigner to make a change in the country, look at Sol or any other thriving business they are mostly foreign owned and operated, why? We are chicken Sh!T$. I am one myself as, who REALLY wants to WORK, not me! But, if nobody works where are we headed, right where we are going, AWAY!

Was jsut about to suggest that! LOL!

Buy out the plates of all those over 50 and offer them "shares" in the new public transist company.

My daddy told me once there was and estimated 900 Bus and taxi plates outstanding in Nassau ALONE! Half of the mwere given away as political favors and just collecting dust (no vehicle on the road).

For those under 50, offer them jobs at a fair wages as bus drivers or conductors in the new service.

The unions, wel dem buggas could take a long leap off a short pier. Dey really ein doin nuttin fa dey workas who payin dem all dat dues money, jes a bunch of hot dern air! (ROYAL OASIS, BATELCO, etc...)

With the price of oil...

Do you know how much a tram system, would benefit this country? In the short term would increase construction jobs. Long term, would would create more jobs for the mechanics and the technicians- with the CSR folks who provide train service.

A tram, bwteen 5-10 stops all through out the busiest parts of Nassau, would take motorists off of the streets- especially if the stops, are 5 minute walks from major office buildings or land marks.

It is a bit of a dream and a stretch...but...having said that, can we go green?

Can we make it a public company? At least 50 % owned by Bahamians? Can we have something visionary and progressive? For flippin once in my lifetime?
:sparky:

London is almost the size of Nassau...maybe a bit bigger. You can't walk ten paces, before you see an underground or an overground.

Saying it will cost us "tax payer money", even in the short term, is an excuse to not think about making true progress in this country.
