View Full Version : Progress!
Alien 03-02-08, - 07:34 PM What Iv'e seen going on in the Bahamas today, especially in politics, is the constant re-hashing of the "same ol'e, same ol'e", with no true movement on the issues.
For example; how many times are we going to have prayer vigils for violence?
How many times, are we going to say to employers that they must sponsor and encourage work progams?
I mean, it's as if we get stuck in a gear and can't move forward. This is not the type of spirit we need egrained into the Bahamian people's psyche. Even worse, our politicians do the same thing-many of the times, they are the worst offenders. In fact, I would dare to say that the reason we can't and probably never will reach a consensus on any form "national plan", because every time we change a government, they revise the same old issues, and waste a year or two, getting up to speed on issues the former government had already noticed. What makes it totally baffling to me...is when they do come to power, they gesture and posture on how they will make things better, with no added extra into making true progress for this society. Atlantis was "minor" progress- tourism is what we have been doing. Urban Renewal was "a little better progress"- but, this is something we should have done 20 years ago.
Another case and point, Minister of Education Carl Bethel, is just now realizng that ciriculum reform is needed in education. He is just also now realizing that poor education performance, is telling on this society and we need to "do something"...DUH, Minister Bethel. What do you suppose we do about it, oh fearless and wise Minister of Education?
Another example, from our leadership, is rooted in this revision exersize of these anchor projects. Once from "we are cancelling all contracts" to dicussing, in detail, how Bahamar is supposed to move forward. And his supporters are cheering on his "progress". LOL...I mean, you wasted an entire 6 months, gesturing and posturing, to now turn around and revise the same thigs we have been doing and should have be doing, since everyone else has been doing and the former, has started the process? Not do it because the former had did it. But, do it because it would be costly to NOT do it.
This waste of time is unacceptable and dis-heartening to young Bahamian professionals. We need to move forward. We need people who are going to take us forward. Not dance around for 6 months, to come back to what we had already come to understand in the first place. For example; true thought into a public transportation initiative must be taken seriously. As serious as creating a market for trade out of it, standardizing some form of green and efficient form of mass travel throughout New Providence, in order to reduce carbons in the long term and create jobs and services, in the short and long term.
The money is an issue, as always. But, that IS progress. We have to spend on initiatives, anyways. We may as well "spend our money right"...something many people like me and a host of others, have been saying. Not just for finding the gaps into services are "truly" needed for public welfare. But, to what issues can present greatest best gain for the long term.
THAT's progress!

I know some of us like it simple. But, some of us can be thoughtful, sometimes. No?
