View Full Version : Techies a Question 720 vs 1080
Bahamasinmyheart 03-12-08, - 12:00 PM I have a couple of 720's and i am thinking about getting a 1080. Mostly because i believe the PS3 is 1080 native??? and the 360 will look much better???
But....i see a large price difference for 1080's. For example:
Insignia or LG Brand 42 inch 1080 for $1000.00 or the flip of that is a Samsung 40 inch 1080 (at 120ghz?) for $2000.00???
what should people really look for? once its a 1080 is the price difference more about the other features (HDMI and DVI input options, etc...) and less about the actual picture?
G_pally 03-12-08, - 12:03 PM not really a tv techie like that but recently got a samsung 42 inch that is beyond awesome with the ps3 and has the HDMI and DVI input options and the ability to stop screen burn. Not that expensive though thats outrageous...$2000...geez

(Yes, the PS3 can handle 1080i output natively.)
Also, a difference explanation:
A 720p signal is made up of 720 horizontal lines. Each frame is displayed in its entirety on-screen for 1/30th of a second. This is know as progressive scan (hence the 'p')The quality is like watching 30 photographic images a second on TV.
A 1080i signal comprises 1080 horizontal lines but all the lines are not displayed on-screen simultaneously. Instead, they are interlaced (hence the 'i'), ie every other lines is displayed for 1/60th of a second and then the alternate lines are displayed for 1/60th of a second. So, the frame rate is still 30 frames per second, but each frame is split into two fields, which your brain then puts together subconsciously.
A 1080p signal is capable of displaying every pixel of the highest-resolution HD broadcasts. They offer more than twice the resolution of step-down models, which are typically 1,366x768, 1,280x720, or 1,024x768.
Since you can afford it, go for the 1080p.

i think this Samsung might be more because of the 120(gh) part..but i dont know what that means as far as actual picture clarity.
Is that your first HDTV? i was kinda shocked when i realized the picture difference when i got one....amazing!!!

Lol ...great game and excellent graphics. My favorite so far this year has been COD4, Mass Effect, and Lost Planet (online is crazy fun) 360.
Im going to get the PS3 mainly because of the Blu Ray.... i got the 360 with the HD DVD player mainly as a way of getting two birds with one stone....i.e game system and high def movie player.....but it looks like i lost the HD DVD battle to Blue Ray. But other than blue ray im not sure why i would use the PS3 over the xbox...the games seem the same?
(and no Spam i aint rich!!!!! i hear praetor got bank tho!)

man you should see the blue ray on that big screen. i ended up drooling with women around...i feel so shame. The ps3 will come out with some of their sequels like dmc4. the xbox has the best graphics in the world right now and its flawless in online play im sure.....2 bad nintento fell so far behind

Yes, the High Def DVDs look great. I am running 720p (which actually looks better than 1080i) sources to a 9' screen.
The refresh rate isn't extremely important, anything over 60hz is good enough. As for the 720/1080 issue...
480i is standard TV, 720p is, as Yorick said, 720 lines of resolution. 1080i is 540 lines, alternating. In theory this is faster than the human eye can see, but some may argue this point. 1080p is the gold. 1080 lines always on screen. So in terms of quality, it goes: 480i -> 1080i -> 720p -> 1080p. Watching movies on 1080i is usually ok, but just be aware that you will see motion blurring during action scenes or while watching sports.
Kuegn 03-12-08, - 06:03 PM Bottom line is, the PS3 puts out 1080p in their movies, and future games will be in 1080p as well. Most games now are only in 720p.
But if you can afford to get a 1080p TV, get it, as pretty soon, there will be a great amount content released in that quality.
Oh, and from a PS3 owner, and an XBOX 360 player, PS3 kicks ***. Currently, the best game on the PS3 to me is Drake's Fortune. Lovely game from top to bottom, side to side, in and out. Plays like a dream, looks great, runs perfectly, excellent story, lots of action, cutscenes, etc.
Buy it and enjoy.

Yes, I've played COD 4, and it's a great FPS, but it is also a different genre from DF, which is an AA. Depsite the games being of different genres, DF is hands down, the greater of the two. Have you played, and beat Drake's Fortune yet?
I'm really waiting for them to release the Dark Sector demo though. :bouncy:
